All the winners on a great night

Selby Cricket Club held their Annual Dinner and Presentation night last Friday at Selby Bowling Club where members and guests enjoyed a superb meal and MC Gareth Harvey looked back on a successful season on and off the pitch and all the captains, umpires, scorers and hard working people behind the scenes and the club sponsors were thanked.

The Under 15 squad were at the dinner to receive their awards after a good season and there were good performances from Joe Bugg and Kayden Lane but the batting trophy went to Jack Huddlestone who scored 265 runs at an average of 33.13. The bowling award went to Rowan Weightman who took 10 wickets at an average of 6.5 and there were also good performances from Jack Mustill and Emma Brewer. The most improved player trophy went to Jack White and Jack Huddlestone also picked up the players player of the year trophy.

The midweek team had a very successful season in the Snaith Evening League and they did the league and cup double with Matty Clark picking up the batting award. Lee Wild won the bowling trophy and the player of the year was the consistent Lewis Longstaff.

The third team finished fifth in Division Three of the York Vale League with several of the clubs successful under 15 team playing and regularly contributing with runs and wickets. Youngsters Jack and Harry Huddlestone both batted well and Joe Bugg hit a couple of half centuries which earned him a call up to the second team. The winner of the batting award was another of the under 15 team Rhys Roddick who scored 183 runs at 22.88. In the bowling department senior players Dan McLoughlin and Atul Vishwakarma both took wickets but it was junior player Caspar Gray who won the bowling award with an impressive 21 wickets at an average of 11.86. The third team player of the season went to Sam Easthill who batted well all season and regularly donned the wicket keeping gloves.

The second team finished in seventh place in a very competitive Division Four Ebor with plenty of good performances. Oliver Steward scored 273 runs at 19.50 with a top score of 57, Youngster Jack Huddlestone scored an impressive 213 runs at 26.63 with a top score of 68. The winner of the batting award went to skipper Graham Phillips who had a remarkable season and he scored 920 runs at an average of 51.12, which included seven fifties and three hundreds and this also earned him the second team player of the year award. In the bowling department Mark Redshaw , Kayden Lane, Nathan Dye and Adam Walters all impressed with the ball but the winner of the bowling trophy was spinner Isaac Leung who took 26 wickets at an average of 12.04.

It was an up and down season for the first team who finished sixth in the table which included 13 victories. Despite a few disappointing results there were some great individual performances. With the ball there were five wicket hauls for Lee Wild, Alex Langhan and Jamie Middleton and a hat trick for Mark Hope. With the bat there were centuries for Matt Hoyle, Alex Bowden and a 60 ball century for Matty Clark. The highlight of the season was a record unbeaten opening partnership of 221 between Matt Hoyle and Alex Bowden against Carlton Towers II. With the bat there were a number of batsmen who contributed. Lee Wild scored 321 runs at 24.69, Matty Clark sored 180 runs at 25.71, Rob Scarr scored 299 runs at 27.18, Darrell Guy hit 267 runs at 29.67, Matt Hoyle scored 636 runs at 42.40 but the deserving winner of the first team batting award was Alex Bowden who scored 749 runs at an average of 62.42, which included five fifties and two centuries and a top score of 129. In the bowling department there were more impressive performances with Luke Berzins taking 20 wickets at an average of 29, Tom Shepherd took 19 wickets at 23.63, Alex Langhan took 38 wickets at 17.98, Jamie Middleton took 27 wickets at 16.52, and Lee Wild took 16 wickets at 16.38. The winner of the bowling award went to pace bowler James Dugher who took 30 wickets at 14.67.

The Rickaby Trophy for the first team player of the year was awarded to wicket keeper Darrell Guy who was again outstanding behind the stumps with 13 catches and 7 stumpings and he also chipped in with 267 runs at an average of 29.67.

The most improved junior in senior cricket award went to Joe Bugg and the best junior in senior cricket was awarded to promising wicket keeper Harry Huddlestone. The Club Person of the Year award went to youngster Alfie Laverack who has not only played for the under 15 team but has played for the third team, second team and the midweek team sometimes at short notice and he is ever present at the at the club.

President Stephen Ward presented the Outstanding Service to the Club trophy to Richard Wain for his hard work behind the scenes for many years.

There was also a special presentation made to Hazel Rickaby who has been a part of Selby CC for many years and has carried out many roles at the club – one of her longest serving roles has been that of first team scorer. The 2022 season was her last as first team scorer after many years of loyal and sterling service.
