York Senior League Division Two Ebor

Selby I 204, Stamford Bridge II 120

Selby first team completed their season with an 84 run win over Stamford Bridge II at Escrick Park but they just missed out on promotion after finishing third in the table.

Selby were asked to bat first after losing the toss and openers Matt Hoyle and Alex Bowden gave them another good start with an opening partnership of 79. Salman Syed (2-38) made the breakthrough for the visitors when he had Hoyle caught at slip for 36 and he dismissed Lee Wild shortly afterwards. Bowden was again in top form and he held the innings together but wickets fell at the other end with Liam Easton taking 4-39 as Selby slipped to 103-4. Darrell Guy joined Bowden and they got the innings back on track with a fifth wicket partnership of 53. Liam Easton ended the partnership when he bowled Guy for 23 to spark a mini collapse. Dave Chaplin (3-42) eventually dismissed Alex Bowden for a stylish 87, which included 8 fours and 2 sixes, as Selby were reduced to 169-9. The last pair of Luke Berzins (22) and Jamie Middleton (11 n.o.) both batted impressively and they added 35 for the last wicket as Selby were bowled out in the 44th over for 204.

In reply Stamford Bridge lost an early wicket when Luke Berzins trapped Thomas Holmes leg before in the second over and in the fifth over Jamie Middleton had Oliver Pimlott caught by Isaac Leung to leave the visitors on 6-2. Liam Easton hit a quick 18 but Middleton had him caught in the deep by Matt Hoyle and when Berzins caught and bowled Simon Dwyer Stamford Bridge were reduced to 37-4 in the 13th over. Dave Chaplin and Roddy Vann both batted well and they added 34 for the fifth wicket before Middleton (3-36) had Chaplin (31) caught by Leung. Spinner Alex Langhan had Vann (16) caught by Alex Bowden as Selby took control but Salman Syed kept the visitors in the game with some classy batting. Lee Wild (3-18) wrapped the game up when he took the last three wickets to fall, which included two more stumpings from Darrell Guy, as the visitors were bowled out for 120 in the 40th over. News came through that Yapham had defeated Wheldrake to finish in second place and York III won the league after defeating Church Fenton. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Peter Burrans and overall, it was a good season for Selby with plenty of fine performances and they will be looking for a promotion push next season.
