All the winners on a great night

Selby Cricket Club held their Annual Dinner and Presentation night last Saturday at Selby Bowling Club where members and guests enjoyed a superb meal and MC Neil Darley looked back on a successful season on and off the pitch and all the captains, umpires, scorers and hard working people behind the scenes and the club sponsors were thanked.

The newly formed Academy team in the Foss Evening League had a good season in Division Four. The side was led by Joe Bugg and Harry Huddlestone and they finished second which earned them promotion. With the bat, Joe Bugg led the way with 360 runs, showing great consistency at the top of the order. There were plenty of impressive innings, none bigger than Glen Crouch’s unbeaten 74, while Iwan White and Harry Huddlestone both made half centuries. The winner of the batting award with 360 runs at an average of 40 was Joe Bugg. In the bowling department, Joshua Colley, Stan Bugg and Seth Wratten all finished with 8 wickets each. Caspar Gray deserves a mention for his control and accuracy with the ball, and there were valuable contributions from George Wells, Alfie Harper and Iwan White. The winner of the bowling award was Stan Bugg with 8 wickets at an average of 12.6. The Academy player of the year was Tom Ellwood, who contributed heavily with the bat and also took the most catches.

The fourth team was captained by Sam Easthill and they played in the newly formed Sunday Vale League which included 16 teams. The team competed well throughout the season finishing in fifth place and had ten wins. Alex Kirk hit 249 runs in his first season with the club, Iwan White hit 204 runs which included a fantastic 124 against Heworth, with Alfie Laverack, George Wells and Sam Easthill all making vital contributions. The winner of the batting award with 366 runs at an average of 33.27, which included two fifties and a century was Alfie Harper. In the bowling department Seth Wratten claimed 12 wickets and Callum Brownlie 10 wickets but the winner with 16 wickets at an average of 22.44 was Alfie Harper which also earned him the player of the year award after a great season.

After winning the last ever Vale Division title the third team were placed in a competitive Division Four of the Yorkshire Premier League North and they finished eighth. Scott Smith returned to the club and hit 215 runs in just 7 games. Steve Sherwood hit 330 runs but the winner with 341 runs at an average of 26 was Iwan White. Several players contributed with the ball, Neil Darley claimed 14 wickets, Iwan White 15 wickets and Alfie Harper 21 wickets. The winner of the bowling trophy was Nathan Dye with 26 wickets at an average of 25. The third team player of the season was Steve Sherwood, who was a near ever present all season, scoring 330 runs with a season best 99 not out at Crossgates.

The second team, led by Darrell Guy took on the tough challenge of Ebor Division Two and finished in a more than respectable fifth place. Graham Phillips was the seasons top scorer, making 493 runs at an average of 30. Gareth Pearce scored 344 runs with a best of 88. Younger players also made their mark with Joe Bugg scoring 156 runs and Harry Huddlestone hit an unbeaten 72 against Londesborough Park. The winner of the batting award went to skipper Darrell Guy who hit 246 runs at an average of 35 including an unbeaten 109 against Wheldrake. On the bowling front several players deserve a mention. George Wells impressed with 20 wickets and Rhys Roddick claimed 16 wickets at an average of just 7.06. Caspar Gray chipped in with 15 wickets and Kayden Lane 13 but the winner with 31 wickets at an average of 12.61 was Alex Langhan. The second team player of the season was awarded to George Wells who had a real breakthrough season featuring 16 times. He took an impressive 20 wickets at 19.60 and contributed 126 runs, helping us over the line in a nail biting finish at Goole.

The first team made a promising start in Championship West but they found the going tough finishing in eleventh place but they did finish the season with an impressive victory over Studley Royal.

Joe Bugg and Matt Hoyle both hit over 200 runs and Rob Scarr scored 304 runs at an average of 25. The winner of the batting award went to skipper Alex Bowden who scored 891 runs at an average of 52.41, which included 8 fifties and a century against Dunnington at Sandhill Lane. In the bowling department Luyanda Gasa took 30 wickets and Lee Wild 22 but the winner was Alex Bowden who took 23 wickets at an average of 23.48. Alex Bowden’s outstanding season also earned him the Rickaby Trophy with Peter Rickaby saying ‘Alex captained the side well through a challenging and tough season, scoring heavily and picking up crucial wickets’.

The best youth in Senior Cricket award went to Joe Bugg who scored nearly 800 runs across the season, hitting half centuries for the first, second and Academy teams.

The most improved youth in Senior Cricket award went to Stan Bugg who contributed nearly 300 runs in Senior cricket, including 2 fifties for the third team. He also took 30 wickets with best figures of 3-18 from 9 overs for the second team. His performances earned him a call up to the first team at the end of the season.

Alex Hornostaj won the most improved Senior Player award after he hit nearly 400 runs, including his first ever half century. He was available to play most weeks and was always willing to move up teams as and when required.

The club person of the year award went to Gareth Harvey who works tirelessly behind the scenes on the senior admin, supporting team captains, as well as playing nearly every week.
