Selby first team had another tough afternoon on Saturday when they travelled to league leaders Osbaldwick and went down to a 151 run defeat after being set a massive total to chase.

The home side won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a good looking track and rapid outfield and openers Harvey Jackson and Jack Sonter soon took advantage. The stylish batsmen were soon scoring quickly and the century opening partnership arrived in only the 18th over but Selby did eventually make a breakthrough in the 23rd over with the total on 135 when Lee Wild had Jackson (79) caught by Matt Hoyle. James Hattee joined Aussie Jack Sonter and there was no respite for the Selby bowlers and fielders as the runs continued to flow in a second wicket partnership of 135. Spinner Subhoda Premarathne made a welcome breakthrough when he trapped Hattee (69) leg before and he then dismissed Sonter for 114, which included 13 fours and a six. Osbaldwick then lost wickets towards the end of their innings and skipper Alex Bowden did slow down the run rate with a spell of 5-77 but the York side still closed on an imposing 310-9 from their 50 overs.

Selby openers Layton Hallam and Matt Hoyle made a promising start but with the total on 39 James Jacques caught and bowled Hallam (21) and in the next over Alfie Oliver dismissed Hoyle (17) leg before. Corey Paull made a good start but he became another victim for Jacques (2-36) when he was caught by James Hattee for 20. Jack Huddlestone worked hard for his 16 but wickets fell at regular intervals with only Alex Bowden providing any serious resistance when he fired 4 fours and 2 big sixes in his rapid 48. Spinner James Calvert finished with 5-38 as the visitors were bowled out for 159 in the 40th over. Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two Ebor

Castleford II 211-7, Selby II 58 all out

Selby second team also had a difficult afternoon in Division Two when they went down to a 153 run defeat to top of the table Castleford II at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first after winning the toss Castleford made a good start with an opening partnership of 61 between Simon Parker and Andrew Lund. Spinner Alex Langhan made the breakthrough when he had Lund (39) caught by Joe Bugg and wickets then began to fall with Joe Bugg taking 3-27 as the visitors slipped to 115-5. The league leaders recovered well with Parker and Thomas Wood adding 83 for the sixth wicket before Nathan Dye trapped Parker (69) leg before. Wood continued to bat well and he hit 8 boundaries in his unbeaten 55 as Castleford closed on 211-7 from their 45 overs.

In reply Selby made a bad start when Chris Colley had Graham Phillips caught by Dylan Tudge in the sixth over. Wickets then tumbled with Colley taking 3-10 and Dylan Tudge 4-24 as the home side slumped to 45-5. Mike Lane (13) and Sam Mason (16) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as Selby were bowled out in the 26th over for just 58 with Jack Brewitt taking 3-11. Thorpe Willoughby I 252-9 Selby III 208 all out

Selby third team’s recent revival in Division Four came to an end at Thorpe Willoughby on Saturday when they went down to a 44 run defeat in a high scoring game.

Batting first the home side made a good start with an opening partnership of 60 between Alex Hinsley (35) and Ben Rucklidge (27) but spinner Spencer Guy (2-51) removed both openers. Wickets for Martyn Rhodes (2-56) saw Thorpe slip to 66-4 but Frazer Hinsley and Sachin Madhas put the home side on top with a fifth wicket partnership of 86. Isaac Leung eventually had Madhas (46) caught by Spencer Guy but there was more support for Hinsley from Krishna Pillai (21), Connor Chaston (13) and Danny Crockford (12). Frazer Hinsley hit 11 fours and a six in his unbeaten 75 and he lifted Thorpe to a very useful 252-9 from their 40 overs.

Chasing the big total Selby made a decent start with Isaac Leung and Martyn Rhodes adding 30 for the first wicket before Lewis Smith had Leung (17) caught by Ben Rucklidge. Martyn Rhodes (39), Dylan Davies (12) and Alex Hornostaj (33) kept up the run chase but wickets for Noah Smith (3-63) and Connor Chaston kept the home side just on top. Chris Harkin hit a quick 43 before he was bowled by Chaston (5-37) and late runs were added by Gareth Harvey (11) and Mark Redshaw (10) as the visitors were bowled out for 208 in the 36th over which did earn them a couple of batting points. Sunday Vale Division One

Selby IV 179 all out, Clifton Alliance IV 181-1

Selby fourth team returned to action on Sunday but they went down to a nine wicket defeat at Clifton Alliance IV despite a useful batting display.

Selby were asked to bat first after losing the toss and they made a good start with openers Alfie Harper and James Stead putting on 54 for the first wicket. Evan Allender ended the partnership when he had Harper (32) caught by William Gallagher which sparked a mini collapse. James Stead worked hard for his 21 but the visitors slipped to 101-7. Skipper Sam Easthill then staged a recovery when he fired 11 boundaries in his brisk 64 before Zac Mead had him caught by Bertie Mittra. Seth Wratten finished unbeaten on 10 as Selby were bowled out for 179 in the 37th over with Wayne Cullen taking 3-21.

The York side batted solidly from the start with the Selby bowlers and fielders having to work hard. Matt Phillips (30) and Bertie Mittra both batted well and the visitors did pick up a wicket when William Gallagher (25) was run out by Dan Catterall. That proved to be the only success for Selby as Mittra (65*) and Harry Smailes (34*) comfortably guided Clifton home in the 32nd over. Selby are at home on Sunday to Dunnington IV.
