Two wins two defeats

Yorkshire Premier League North Division One West

Barwick in Elmet I 115, Selby I 119-1

Selby first team continued their good start to the season with a comprehensive nine wicket win at Barwick in Elmet.

Skipper Gareth Roberts won the toss and elected to bowl first and it proved to be a good decision with opening bowlers Jamie Middleton and Roberts keeping things tight early on. Middleton made the first breakthrough when he had Callum George neatly caught at slip by Matt Hoyle. It was soon 21-2 when Roberts had Chris Harrison (15) caught behind by Darrell Guy but Rob Nicholls and Jake Wilkie held up the Selby attack. The introduction of Lee Wild ended a 48 run partnership for the third wicket when he had the dangerous Wilkie (27) expertly caught by Zac Buttle in his first over. The home side began to struggle as wickets tumbled with Wild taking 4-17 from his eleven overs which included a smart stumping by Guy. Nicholls held the innings together but his stubborn resisitance was ended by James Dugher when he was bowled for a solid 37 and Dugher finished with 3-6 as Barwick were bowled out for 115 in the 42nd over.

Selby were soon scoring quickly when they replied with Alex Bowden producing his form from last season as he punished any loose bowling. There was good support from Matt Hoyle as the fifty partnership arrived in only the 7th over and the century partnership in the 13th over. The home side did take a late wicket when Adam Cooper bowled Hoyle (27) but Joe Bugg joined Bowden and they reached the victory target in the 16th over with Bowden firing 9 fours and 2 big sixes in his unbeaten 69. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Simon Parsons and Selby play early season league leaders Bolton Percy at Sandhill Lane on Saturday.

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Three West

Scholes 66 Selby II 67-5

In Division Three Selby second team registered their first win of the season when a top class bowling performance earned them a five wicket win over Scholes at Sandhill Lane.

Skipper Gareth Harvey asked the visitors to bat after winning the toss and the Leeds side never really got going against some good bowling and fielding. Wickets fell at regular intervals with Luke Berzins (2-30) and Caspar Gray (2-15) doing the early damage. Spinner Alex Langhan also took a wicket but Rayhaan Ahmed (15) and Ahsan Yousaf (16) both worked hard. Kayden Lane (4-5) joined the attack and he quickly wrapped up the innings as Scholes were skittled out for just 66 in the 25th over.

Chasing the small total openers Graham Phillips and Isaac Leung put on 36 for the first wicket before Leung (12) was bowled by Zaref Mohammed and he struck again three runs later to dismiss Phillips (15). Gareth Pearce (9) and Alex Hornstaj looked to be guiding Selby comfortably home but Zaref Mohammed (4-7) sparked a mini collapse as they lost three quick wickets but Hornastaj (18*) steered the home side to a win in the 18th over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Ashley Heeley and Selby travel to Tadcaster Magnet II on Saturday.

York Vale League Division One

Pocklington III 185-8, Selby III 118

After last weeks washout Selby third team got their season underway but they went down to a 67 run defeat to Pocklington III at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first the visitors made good progress with Ian Scott (24), Martin Stables (48) and Frank Fitzpatrick (20) all batting well. Darren Hunter took 2-44 and George Wells (1-30) to keep Selby in the game. Stan Bugg grabbed a wicket and Nathan Dye (2-24) slowed down the run rate with a good spell but Lewis Chaplin finished unbeaten on 26 as Pocklington closed on a useful 185-8 from their 40 overs.

In reply Selby lost early wickets with Lewis Chaplin taking 2-11 but there was a revival thanks to Ed Aarons (35). After his dismissal the visitors took control and the home side fell behind the required run rate. There was some late resistance from skipper Steve Sherwood (14) and Darren Hunter (17) but Selby were bowled out for 118 in the 31st over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor John & Jackie Sherwood and Selby travel to Ben Johnson on Saturday.

York Vale League Division Two

Selby IV 162-9, Pocklington IV 163-8

Selby fourth team also got their season underway when they travelled to Pocklington IV on Sunday and they went down to a narrow two wicket defeat in a thrilling game.

Batting first Selby lost early wickets with David Fairhurst (3-24) doing the early damage but the innings was held together by Iwan White who hit 8 fours and a six in his impressive 55. Ryan Kidd (3-14) kept the home side on top as Selby slipped to 104-7 but wicket keeper Sam Easthill hit 4 fours and 2 sixes in a rapid 43. There was good support from Senith Ruhunuge (12*) as Selby closed on 162-9.

Pocklington made a solid start with an opening partnership of 36 between Shaun Wilson and James Kirby but Jawad Sharizad made the breakthrough when he had Kirby (16) caught by Seth Wratten.

Wratten then trapped Wilson (18) leg before to reduce the home side to 48-2. There were wickets for Zac Kierans and James Thackray but skipper Lee Dobbins then dominated the innings and he looked to be guiding Pocklington home as he hit 8 fours in his 63 until he was run out by Richard Mustill. Two wickets for spinner Mark Hope (2-29) kept Selby in the game and when Mustill ran out Freddie Forman (25) a tight finish loomed. In a tense finish Pocklington just squeezed home by two wickets with just one ball remaining. Selby face a busy weekend when they play Stamford Bridge IV on Saturday at Sandhill Lane and then travel to Heworth IV on Sunday.
