Selby first team got their season underway in the Championship when they travelled to Whitkirk I but they went down to a 42 run defeat.

Skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and asked the home side to bat first and they lost a wicket in the first over when Tom Shepherd trapped Tom Webb leg before. Simon Webb then produced some stylish batting and with support from Sean Pickles they added exactly 50 for the second wicket before Luke Berzins made the breakthrough when he had Pickles neatly caught at slip by Mark Hope. Webb (42) looked in good form but he was dismissed when Berzins (2-29) had him caught behind by Harry Huddlestone. Glen Crouch dismissed James Shipton to reduce the Leeds side to 71-4 but Zac Lodge and the big hitting Jack Wood added 88 for the fifth wicket before Alex Bowden had Lodge (23) smartly caught by Matt Hoyle. Whitkirk skipper Michael O’Brien (39*) kept the scoreboard ticking over as the home side were bowled out in the last over for 217 with Wild finishing with 3-34.

In reply there was an early setback for the visitors when Matt Hoyle was bowled by Michael O’Brien in the second over. Alex Bowden held the early part of the innings together but wickets for Tom Webb, Josh Thompson and Muhammed Ahmadzai saw Selby struggle 44-4. Oliver Steward joined Bowden and they had to work hard but they gradually got on top of the bowling and they added 90 for the fifth wicket. Leg spinner Ahmadzai (5-31) ended the partnership when he bowled Steward for a solid 23 and six runs later he struck again when he bowled Bowden for a vital 75 as the visitors slipped to 154-9. A last wicket partnership of 21 between Luke Berzins (12*) and Tom Shepherd (14) lifted Selby to 175 all out in the 48th over which earned them a couple of batting points.
