Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West

Selby I 148, Sheriff Hutton Bridge II 149-4

Selby first team travelled to league leaders Sheriff Hutton Bridge II on Saturday and despite a battling performance they went down to a six wicket defeat.

The home side won the toss and asked Selby to bat first and they made a good start with openers Alex Bowden and Joe Bugg putting on 61 for the first wicket. Harry Sutcliffe made the breakthrough in the 16th over when he bowled Bugg (28) and wickets then began to tumble. Alex Bowden held the early part of the innings together but he was eventually dismissed by Sam Giannini (3-49) for 59, which included 6 fours and a six. There was some late resistance from Simon Tolson (11) and Luyanda Gasa (9) but Rueben McBride (3-26) and Aditya Mydeo (2-10) kept Bridge on top as Selby were bowled out for 148 in the 46th over.

In reply Sheriff Hutton Bridge lost an early wicket when pace bowler Luyanda Gasa had the prolific Matthias Paltridge caught behind by Charlie Baird. In the 12th over skipper Alex Bowden caught and bowled Jack Hugill (20) to reduce the home side to 52-2. The league leaders were made to work hard for their runs and Luke Berzins grabbed a wicket when he bowled Kiran Chakraborty (13) and when Bowden had Sutcliffe caught behind it left the home side on 76-4. Adita Mydeo (46*) and Isaac Gianini (40*) steadied things for Bridge and they gradually got on top of the bowling and a 73 run partnership for the fifth wicket saw them home in the 26th over. Selby are at home to Dunnington on Saturday.

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two (Ebor)

Pocklington II 114, Selby II 118-2

In Division Two Selby second team returned to winning ways with a comfortable eight wicket win over Pocklington II at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first Pocklington lost early wickets and never really recovered with tight spells from Stan Bugg and Alfie Harper. Jordan Richardson (4-43) bowled well and spinner Alex Langhan (3-33) kept Selby in control. James Saltmer (27) and Freddie Forman (25) did hold up the Selby attack but the visitors were bowled out for 114 in the 35th over.

In reply Selby did lose an early wicket but opener Graham Phillips and Gareth Pearce were soon scoring quickly. A second wicket partnership of 78 was ended when Fred Nightingale bowled Gareth Pearce (27) but Phillips fired 12 fours and 2 sixes in his rapid unbeaten 70 as Selby reached the victory target in the 19th over. The second team travel to Wheldrake on Saturday.

Church Fenton II 228-7, Selby III 148

Selby third team’s winning run in Division Four came to an end on Saturday when they went down to an 80 run defeat to Church Fenton II at Sandhill Lane.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first and it proved to be a good decision after an opening partnership of 55 between Oliver Baxter and Stuart Bell. Nathan Dye made the breakthrough when he had Baxter (22) stumped by Gareth Harvey but Bell kept the runs flowing with good support from Tahir Gadiwala (14) and Ash Richardson (16). Spinner Callum Brownlie eventually had Bell (60) caught behind but Mustafa Nazir (58) and Alex Wilman (24) kept Church Fenton in command. Iwan White took 2-15 but the visitors closed on a useful 228-7 from their 40 overs.

Chasing the big total Selby made a decent start with an opening partnership of 31 from Steve Sherwood (13) and Iwan White (22). Alfie Laverack hit a quick 24 but a tidy spell from Mick Dancer (3-27) kept Church Fenton on top. The home side slipped to 110-8 with Mustafa Nazir taking 2-10 but there was some impressive late batting from Mike Dugher (16) and Richard Mustill (21) which lifted Selby to 148 all out in the 35th over. The third team travel to Drax II on Saturday.

Vale League Sunday Division

Pocklington IV 152, Selby IV 83

Selby fourth team travelled to Pocklington IV on Sunday and they went down to a 69 run defeat.

Batting first Pocklington lost an early wicket when Iwan White had James Kirby caught by Simon Easthill but Lee Dobbins and Archie Sumner added 50 for the second wicket. Seth Wratten eventually bowled Dobbins (20) and he later had Sumner (44) caught by Alfie Harper. Seth Wratten went on to take 5-45 from his ten overs but late runs from Teddy Wilson (18*) and Jonny Sumner (14) lifted the home side to 152 all out.

The Selby reply started badly when Sam Easthill was caught behind in the first over but Simon Easthill and Iwan White (16) both batted solidly in a second wicket partnership of 41. Two quick wickets for Freddie Forman saw Selby reduced to 45-3 and when David Fairhurst bowled Simon Easthill (22) Pocklington began to get on top. Sam Whincup (3-5) and Teddy Wilson (2-11) kept up the pressure as Selby slipped to 83 all out in the 18th over. The fourth team complete their season on Sunday when Pickering III are the visitors to Sandhill Lane.

Selby I 214, South Milford 217-7

Selby first team were in action on Bank Holiday Monday and despite an improved batting performance they went down to a narrow three wicket defeat to South Milford at Sandhill Lane.

Selby skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and elected to bat first on another good looking track but they lost opener Joe Bugg in the second over when he was caught and bowled by Adam Sykes. The innings then revolved around Alex Bowden and he added 52 for the second wicket with Mark Hope before Sykes (2-30) had Hope (20) caught behind. Harry Huddlestone joined Bowden and they added 51 for the third wicket but the partnership was ended by spinner Fred Murphy who bowled Huddlestone (24) in the 24th over. Further wickets for Murphy (2-38) and Josh Summerscales saw Selby slip to 155-5 but Bowden continued to bat stylishly until he was run out for 98, which included 13 fours and a six. Valuable late runs were added by Tom Shepherd (13), Luke Berzins (11) and Luyanda Gasa (16*) but a good spell from Joe Raynor (3-34) saw the home side bowled out for 214 in the 48th over.

In reply South Milford made a steady start through openers Charlie and Will Bramley but a first wicket partnership of 43 was ended by Tom Shepherd when he bowled Charlie Bramley (25) in the eighth over. Miles Hemann-Petersen joined Will Bramley and they both batted well in a second wicket partnership of 58 which was ended by Alex Bowden when he had Bramley (30) caught by Oliver Steward. There was a tidy spell from Stan Bugg on his first team debut but the visitors looked to be well on top when Hemann- Peterson and skipper Harry Jackson took the total to 160. Spinner Alex Langhan made the breakthrough when he bowled Hemann-Peterson (55) and in the same over he dismissed Joe Raynor. Alex Bowden then caught and bowled Jack Hebden and when Langhan (3-49) superbly caught and bowled Jackson (41) it set up tight finish. South Milford were reduced to 197-7 when Luyanda Gasa trapped Adam Sykes (9) leg before but James Bramley (21*) and Josh Summerscales (7*) eventually steered the visitors home in the 48th over.
