Yorkshire Premier League North Division One West
Heslington I 74 Selby I 78-4
There was an early finish at Sandhill Lane on Saturday when Selby first team returned to winning ways with a rapid six wicket win over Heslington.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first but they found Selby’s opening bowlers Tom Shepherd and Luke Berzins in top form with wickets soon falling. Shepherd struck first when he had Liam Mahoney caught by Alex Bowden in the third over and two overs later he bowled the other opener Will Phelps to reduce the York side to 11-2. Wickets then fell at the other end with Berzins destroying the middle order with wicket keeper Harry Huddlestone taking three catches. There was some resistance from Suranga Uragaha who hit a quick 21 before Shepherd had him caught by Matt Hoyle but the visitors crashed to 74 all out in the 22nd over with Shepherd taking 5-44 and Berzins 5-24.
Chasing the small total Selby lost a wicket in the first over when lively opening bowler Ryan Thompson bowled Matt Hoyle. Rob Scarr joined Alex Bowden and they added 29 for the second wicket in quick time before spinner Tim Owen bowled Scarr (16) and the home side were reduced to 30-3 when Thompson bowled Ian Huddlestone. Charlie Baird and Bowden then both scored briskly but their fourth wicket partnership of 32 was ended by the impressive Thompson (3-31) who trapped Baird (18) leg before. Lee Wild (8*) hit the winning runs in only the 14th over with Bowden finishing unbeaten on a classy 31. The win lifts Selby up to sixth in the table and they are at home to Thorp Arch & Boston Spa on Saturday. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Linden Environmental Consultancy Ltd.
Yorkshire Premier League North Division Three (Ebor)
South Milford II 203-9, Selby II 207-3
In Division Three Selby second team continued their good run with a seven wicket win at South Milford II in a high scoring game.
The home side won the toss and made a good start after deciding to bat first with openers Peter Batty and Ali Solway putting on 76 for the first wicket. Joe Bugg ended the partnership when he had Solway (33) caught by Alex Hornostaj in the 15th over and he later bowled Batty who hit 7 fours and a six in his 51. Andy Radi hit a quick 37 before he was bowled by Nathan Dye (4-60) and Bugg went on to take 4-13 from his seven overs as the home side were reduced to 167-9. Milford fought back when the last pair of Matt Hildon (29*) and Fred Murphy (8*) added 36 for the last wicket as the home side closed on a useful 203-9 from their 40 overs.
The Selby reply got off to a stuttering start with early wickets for George Meyer (2-29) and Steve Winspear as the visitors were reduced to 43-3 in the 8th over. Oliver Steward and Kayden Lane then steadied things and they gradually got on top of the bowling with some excellent batting. Steward and Lane were both in great form and produced some top class strokes as Selby took control of the game. South Milford used seven different bowlers in an attempt to break the partnership but Selby reached the victory target in the 34th over. Steward hit 14 fours and a six in his unbeaten 94 and Lane fired 9 boundaries in his unbeaten 71 in their unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 164. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Dave Lee and Selby travel to league leaders Crossgates on Saturday.
York Vale League Division One
Selby III 237-7, Thorpe Willoughby I 163-2
Selby third team returned to action on Saturday and they cemented their place at the top of the table with a 74 run win at Thorpe Willoughby I.
Thorpe won the toss and asked Selby to bat first and they lost early wickets with Frazer Hinsley (3-55) doing the damage as the visitors struggled to 46-3. Opener Isaac Leung held the early part of the innings together until Will Townson had him caught by Hinsley for 37 and Selby were reduced to 86-5 when Neil Darley was run out by Danny Crockford. Jack Hunter and Iwan Hunter then turned the game round with a crucial sixth wicket partnership of 92 which was eventually ended by Crockford when he had White (42) caught by Ben Rutlidge. Crockford struck again to have Hunter (71) caught by Pete Weston but Stan Bugg (30*) and Darren Hunter (27*) kept the runs flowing as the visitors closed on a very useful 237-7.
Chasing the big total Thorpe Willoughby batted solidly but tight bowling from Selby kept the run rate down. There was a good start to the innings from Frazer Hinsley and Ben Rutlidge which was ended by Dan McLoughlin when he had Rutlidge (14) caught by Jack Hunter. Ross Powell worked hard for his 20 until he retired and spinner Mark Hope had Pete Weston caught by Stan Bugg. That was the last wicket to fall as Hinsley and Jake Wild then added 77 for the third wicket as the home side were restricted to 163-2 at the close with Hinsley unbeaten on 85 and Wild unbeaten on 30. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Percy & Barbara Gouldsbrough and Selby are at home to Ovington II on Saturday.
