third team clinch league title

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two (Ebor)

Carlton Towers II 179-6 Selby I 180-4

Selby first team continued their great run Division Two when they picked up a six wicket win at Carlton Towers II on Saturday in the last game of the season played in very hot conditions.

Skipper Tom Shepherd won the toss and asked the home side to bat first and once again tight bowling from Jamie Middleton and Gareth Roberts made run scoring difficult. The first wicket fell in the fourth over when Roberts had Alex Hartley caught behind by Darrell Guy and in the eleventh over Middleton bowled Darren Graves to leave Carlton on 22-2. Middleton finished the season with another accurate spell of 1-13 from his twelve over spell but Jake Dawson and Ben Copeland both batted solidly and they added 82 for the third wicket. Lee Wild ended the partnership when he trapped Dawson (49) leg before and Copeland (43) was run out shortly after. Tom Shepherd had Marcus Thandhi (11) caught by Joe Bugg at square leg to reduce the home side to 131-5 but late runs were added by Marcus Atkinson (23*) and James Stephenson (18*) which lifted Carlton to 179-6 at the close.

Selby openers Matt Hoyle and Matty Clark were soon scoring quickly but with the score on 14 James Stephenson bowled Clark. Charlie Baird joined Hoyle and they both batted stylishly in a second wicket partnership of 72. Spinner Jake Dawson made the breakthrough when he had Baird (44) caught by Stephenson but Joe Bugg (13) then gave Hoyle good support as the runs continued to flow. Marcus Atkinson dismissed Bugg but the experienced Lee Wild joined Hoyle and they kept Selby on top. Wild fired nine boundaries before he was run out for 43 and Hoyle also hit nine fours in his classy unbeaten 69 as Selby reached the victory target in the 31st over. Wins for Barwick in Elmet and Scarcroft means Selby finish in third place and thanks go to match ball sponsors Percy & Barbara Gouldsbrough.

Yorkshire Premier League Division Four (Ebor)

Scholes 189-9 Selby II 160

Selby second team finished their season in Division Four with a narrow defeat to promotion chasing Scholes at Escrick Park.

Batting first the Leeds side lost early wickets with Caspar Gray again in top form and his great spell saw the visitors reduced to 22-3. Opener Faiz Ahmed and Bilal Mahmood staged a recovery and they added 86 for the fourth wicket before Mark Hope had Mahmood (35) caught by Rhys Roddick. Hussein (53) continued to hold the innings together but when he was bowled by Roddick (3-30) Scholes were struggling on 128-7. Zaref Mohammed (20) and Hamza Pacha (35) both produced some late big hitting and they enabled the visitors to close on a useful 189-9 from their 40 overs.

In reply Selby lost an early wicket when Oliver Steward was bowled by Adam Tumber but skipper Graham Phillips and Sam Mason added 36 for the second wicket before Hamza Pacha had Mason (13) caught by Hussain. Shabaz Hussein joined the attack and he had Phillips (33) caught behind but Mark Hope (20) and Zac Buttle (17) kept Selby in the game until they became more victims for Hussein (4-32). The home side slipped to 103-6 but Luke Berzins (29) and Richard Waterton (24) set up a tight finish as they added 50 for the seventh wicket but wickets for Mohsen Idris (2-14) and Jaspreet Singh saw Selby bowled out for 160 in the 38th over. Selby finished in a respectable fifth place in a very competitive division.

York Vale League Division Three

Church Fenton III 107-7, Selby III 110-2

Selby third team completed their season in the York Vale League with a comfortable eight wicket win at Church Fenton III which clinched the third division title.

The home side won the toss and the young side elected to bat first but the Selby bowlers were on top form from the start with run scoring proving difficult. After losing an early wicket young batsmen Ali Solway and Max Taylor held up the Selby attack with some solid batting. A fifty partnership for the second wicket was eventually ended by Neil Darley when he trapped Taylor (21) leg before. Skipper Jim Hughes hit a quick 18 before Sam Easthill had him neatly caught by Rhys Roddick and Easthill (4-16) also dismissed Solway (24) as wickets fell towards the end of the innings. Andy Emmott finished unbeaten on 12 as Church Fenton were restricted to 107-7 at the close.

With rain threatening Selby openers Harry Huddlestone and Alfie Laverack both produced some big hitting against the young Church Fenton attack. Laverack hammered five fours and a six in his rapid 36 before he was bowled by George Meyer but Gareth Pearce joined Huddlestone and runs continued to flow. Pearce stroked five boundaries before he was bowled by Tracey Dancer for 26 and Kayden Lane hit the winning runs in the 11th over with Huddlestone finishing unbeaten on 32. The win means Selby complete the league and cup double in a very successful season.
