Sessay II 222-9 Selby I 163

Selby first team made the long trip to Sessay on Saturday but went down to a 59 run defeat after being in a good position.

Skipper Alex Bowden once again won the toss and asked the home team to bat first and tight bowling from Jamie Middleton and Luyanda Gasa kept the run rate down early in the innings. Middleton took the first wicket in the 11th over when he had Dave Johnson (16) caught at slip by Mark Hope. Opener Ferdinand Rex and number three Chris Till gradually increased the run rate as they added 68 for the second wicket but Tom Shepherd (2-34) took a couple of quick wickets to reduce Sessay to 98-3. Tom Sowerby joined Rex and they added 83 for the fourth wicket befor Alex Bowden had Rex caught by Caspar Gray for a vital 83. Luyanda Gasa returned to the attack to dismiss Sowerby (46) and he went on to take 4-47 from his 13 overs but late runs were added by James Clements-Byrne (19) and Lee Margerison (15*) as Sessay closed on 222-9 from their 50 overs.

In reply Selby made their now usual good start with openers Matt Hoyle and Alex Bowden putting on 95 for the first wicket but the introduction of Ferdinand Rex sparked a collapse when he bowled Hoyle (30) in the 23rd over and he quickly removed Mark Hope. Rex (3-23) made a strong claim for the man of the match award when in his next over he caught and bowled the in form Bowden for 58. Spinner Stephen Langstaff (3-27) then had Charlie Baird caught by that man Rex to reduce the visitors to 111-4 in the 31st over. The Selby reply then revolved around Rob Scarr who was going well until he was run out for 37. Layton Hallam chipped in with 14 but wickets fell as the visitors tried to increase the run rate with Dom Atkinson taking 3-31 as Selby slipped to a disappointing 163 all out in the 47th over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Elcocks Ltd and Selby are at home to Sheriff Hutton Bridge II on Saturday.

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two Ebor

Castleford II 187, Selby II 113

It was a tough afternoon for the second team when they went down to a 74 run defeat to Castleford II at Sandhill Lane.

The West Yorkshire side batted first and despite a couple of early wickets from George Wells the innings went on to be dominated by opener Findlay Anderson. A third wicket partnership of 86 between Anderson and Dylan Tudge (27) put the visitors on top but Selby fought back when spinner Callum Brownlie took a couple of quick wickets. Anderson and Gareth Boucher then added 69 for the sixth wicket before Stan Bugg had Boucher (27) stumped by Darrell Guy. Anderson fired 12 fours and 4 sixes before he was bowled by Stan Bugg (3-18) for 111 and the Castleford innings was wrapped up by George Wells (4-25) as the visitors were bowled out in the 38th over for 187.

The Selby reply never really got going after losing early wickets and they struggled to 18-3 in the only the sixth over. There was a revival thanks to Joe Bugg and Gareth Pearce who added 56 for the fourth wicket before Anderson dismissed Bugg (30). Selby’s challenge faded after Gareth Pearce was run out for 39 and despite a solid 12 from Stan Bugg on his second team debut the home side collapsed to 113 all out in the 27th over. Findlay Anderson enjoyed his trip to Selby when he finished with 4-27. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Jim Barr and Selby travel to Pocklington II on Saturday.

Burn II 88 Selby III 91-0

There was a local derby at Sandhill Lane on Saturday when Burn II were the visitors, but they went down to ten wicket defeat to Selby third team after being dismissed for a low total.

Skipper Isaac Leung won the toss and asked the visitors to bat and they made a bad start with early wickets for Alfie Harper and Darren Hunter who took 2-11 from his ten overs. Burn crashed to 42-6 with Harper taking 4-31 but there was a mini revival thanks to experienced skipper Ashley Abbott (24) before he was bowled by Seth Wratten. There were a couple of wickets for Isaac Leung and Nico Usher finished unbeaten on 15 as the visitors were bowled out in the 34th over for 88.

Chasing the small total Selby had few problems with openers Jack Hunter and Steve Sherwood (11*) both batting well.
