First win for first team

Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West

Selby I 238-8, Thirsk I 210

Selby first team picked up their first victory of the season when they travelled to Thirsk and came away with a 28 run win in an entertaining game.

Skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and elected to bat first on a good looking track and they made a great start with an opening partnership of 115 between Bowden and Matt Hoyle. The home side eventually made the breakthrough in the 22nd over when Ross McAndrew caught and bowled Hoyle (43) and shortly after he dismissed Rob Scarr. Mark Hope joined Bowden and they kept the visitors on top as they added 55 for the third wicket before James Wilkinson had Hope caught for 36. Bowden continued to bat stylishly and he looked to be heading for another century but spinner Josh Nielson had him caught for 93, which included 10 boundaries. Lee Wild chipped in with 19 but spin bowlers Nielson (3-31), James Wilkinson and Tom Spence slowed down the run rate and they restricted Selby to 238-8 at the close.

In reply the home side also made a good start with openers Harry Collinson and Tom Baldock soon scoring quickly with Baldock dominating the partnership with the Selby fielders having to work hard on Thirsk’s huge ground at the racecourse. Lee Wild joined the attack to make the breakthrough with the total on 71, when he had Collinson (16) caught by Mark Hope. Five runs later Tom Shepherd (2-33) grabbed the vital wicket of Baldock, who had raced to 54 from 31 balls, when he was caught by Matt Hoyle. Thirsk continued to score quickly but Selby just managed to stay on top as they took wickets at important times. On his first team debut Caspar Gray bowled Tom Scott (37) and he took 1-25 in his tidy six over spell. There were tight spells from Jamie Middleton (3-42) and Lee Wild (3-58) with more good catches taken by Hope, Hoyle and Oliver Steward. There was a wicket for Alex Bowden when he caught and bowled Oliver Tindall (16) as a close finish loomed but Middleton took the last wicket in the 45th over as Thirsk were bowled out for 210. In Division Two Selby second team’s good start to the season ended when they went down to a six wicket defeat to a strong Crossgates side at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first Selby lost early wickets and they struggled to 50-5 but Joe Bugg did hold the innings together. There was support for Bugg from skipper Darrell Guy (16) but Rohullah (5-12) and Satish (3-23) kept the Leeds side in control. Rhys Roddick and Bugg added 37 for the eighth wicket before Bugg was run out for an impressive 51, which included 6 fours and a six. Roddick finished unbeaten on 23 as Selby were bowled out in the 37th over for 120.

The visitors made a rapid start to their reply with Balraj Singh Seehra and Rangappa both punishing any loose bowling but Selby did miss some chances to make a breakthrough. An opening partnership of 87 was ended by Rhys Roddick when he bowled Rangappa (56) and spinner Callum Brownlie (2-38) picked up a couple of wickets but Crossgates reached the victory target in the 23rd over with Seehra finishing unbeaten on 41.
