Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West

Selby I 182, South Milford I 186-4

Selby first team’s losing run in the Championship continued on Saturday when they went down to a six wicket defeat at South Milford.

The game started well for Selby after skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and elected to bat first and the visitors made a great start with Bowden and Matt Hoyle both batting stylishly. An opening partnership of 97 was ended by the introduction of spinner Fred Murphy when he bowled Bowden (37) in the 18th over. Rob Scarr joined Hoyle and they added 38 for the second wicket before Jack Hebden bowled Scarr (17) in the 25th over. Matt Hoyle continued to bat well but he became another victim for Murphy when he was bowled for 68, which included 10 boundaries, and following this dismissal the Selby innings began to lose momentum. Joe Bugg chipped in with a cameo 21 but Murphy’s impressive spell of 5-52 from his 13 overs put South Milford on top. Jack Hebden (3-45) wrapped up the Selby innings in the 43rd over to leave the visitors all out for 182.

The South Milford reply started steadily against some tight Selby bowling and openers Charlie Bramley and Harry Jackson put on exactly 50 for the first wicket before new recruit Rob Peet made the breakthrough when he bowled Jackson (25) in the 14th over. There was another tight spell from Jamie Middleton (1-32) who had Will Hodgkiss (14) caught by Luke Berzins to reduce the home side to 65-2. Selby were still in the game when Rob Peet struck again to have Bramley (27) caught by Matt Hoyle but Jack Handley joined Miles Hemann- Petersen and they both batted powerfully from the start. A fourth wicket partnership of 67 put South Milford on top with Handley blasting a quick 33 before Alex Bowden had him caught by Berzins. Hemann - Petersen fired 5 fours and 3 sixes in his unbeaten 49 as South Milford reached the victory target in the 39th over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Jim Barr and Selby return to Sandhill Lane on Saturday when Leeds side Whitkirk are the visitors.
