Yorkshire Premier League North Divsion One West
Selby I 144 South Milford I 147-6
Selby first team’s losing run continued on Saturday when they went down to a four wicket defeat at South Milford after another disappointing batting display.
Skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and elected to bat first and they suffered an early blow when Bowden was bowled by Sean Nesbitt in the second over. Rob Scarr quickly reached double figures but he became another victim for Nesbitt when he was caught in the deep by James Bramley. Opener Matt Hoyle held the innings together but wickets fell at the other end at regular intervals with Joe Raynor taking wickets and more good catches taken by the Milford fielders. Spinner Sam Thomas had Jack Huddlestone (16) stumped by Ben White and Raynor went on to take 4-46 from his 13 over spell. Spinner James Bramley joined the attack to end Hoyle’s resistance when he was caught by Will Bramley for a vital 48. The last pair of Darrell Guy (11*) and Tom Shepherd did add 24 for the last wicket but Bramley (2-17) bowled Shepherd (14) in the 31st over to leave Selby all out for 144.
South Milford made a solid start to their reply with an opening partnership of 33 from Jack Handley and Charlie Bramley but the visitors fought back when Berzins bowled Handley (9) in the sixth over. Tom Shepherd then struck in the ninth over when he bowled Alex Ward and with his next ball he trapped Will Bramley leg before to reduce the home side to 40-3. Shepherd (3-55) then bowled Joe Barr and when Luke Berzins (2-40) had Charlie Bramley (22) caught behind by Harry Huddlestone South Milford were struggling on 78-5. Ben White and Joe Raynor then batted powerfully and they added 60 for the sixth wicket in quick time before Alex Bowden had White (31) caught by Zac Buttle. Raynor hit 10 fours and 2 sixes in his unbeaten 57 as the home side reached the victory target in the 29th over. Selby did pick up a couple of bowling points but they remain seventh in the table. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Darren Hunter and Selby are at home to Heslington on Saturday.
Yorkshire Premier League North Division Three (Ebor)
Goole II 156, Selby II 157-6
In Division Three Selby second team had a better afternoon at Sandhill Lane when they beat promotion chasing Goole II by four wickets.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a good looking track and they lost an early wicket when Sam Coppin was bowled by Kayden Lane in the second over. The Goole batsmen had to work hard against some tight bowling and Anthony Gibbins (21) was going well until Lane (3-42) had him caught by Matty Clark. Richard Waterton had Craig Chafer (13) caught behind by Gareth Harvey and Lucas Matthews (23), Callum Woodcock (11) and Ben Scorah (16) all batted solidly until they were dismissed by spinner Alex Langhan (3-37). Nathan Dye (3-18) efficiently mopped up the tail as Goole were bowled out for 156 in the last of their 40 overs.
In reply Selby also lost an early wicket when Matty Clark was bowled by Lucas Matthews but Graham Phillips and Joe Bugg recovered the situation with a second wicket partnership of 68 to put the home side in a good position. Thomas Marritt ended the partnership when he had Phillips (34) caught behind but Bugg continued to bat well and he had good support from Oliver Steward (10). Henry Appleby eventually dismissed Bugg for a stylish 50 when he was caught by Freddie Foster but Kayden Lane (11) and father Mike kept Selby on top. Two more wickets for Appleby (3-33) kept Goole in the game but Mike Lane (22*) and George Wells (9*) steered Selby home in the 37th over and the win lifts them up to fifth on the table. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Simon Parsons and Selby travel to South Milford II on Saturday.
York Vale League Division Two
Wheldrake II 263-6, Selby IV 127
The young Selby fourth team had a tough afternoon at league leaders Wheldrake II when went down to a 136 run defeat after being set a massive total to chase.
Batting first after winning the toss Wheldrake openers Gary Bell and Praful were soon scoring quickly and they put on 117 for the first wicket before Iwan White had Praful caught by Dan McLoughlin for a rapid 72. Bell and Paul Rogers kept the runs flowing and they added exactly 100 for the second wicket before Stan Bugg had Bell (87) caught by Alex Hornostaj. Dan McLoughlin then had Rogers (34) stumped by Ian Huddlestone and three wickets for Senitha Ruhunuge (3-18) did slow down the run rate but the home side closed on an imposing 263-6.
Chasing the big total openers Alex Hornostaj (12) and Ian Huddlestone (17) did give the visitors a decent start but after they were both dismissed by Piyush Kanikdale (2-26) the innings never really got going. James Thackray (11) and Stan Bugg (12) both worked hard but skipper Gary Bell (2-7) kept the home side in control. Jawad Sharizad (21) was going well until he was bowled by Hazel Roberts (2-31) as the visitors were bowled out for 127. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Mel Neary and Selby are at home to Church Fenton III on Sunday.
