Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West
Whitkirk I 244-9, Selby I 152
It was another frustrating afternoon for Selby first team on Saturday when they went down to a 92 run defeat to Whitkirk after being in a good position at Sandhill Lane.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on another good looking track and opener Tom Webb (18) was soon scoring quickly but in the fourth over he was trapped leg before by pace bowler Luyanda Gasa. Whitkirk were reduced to 31-2 in the eighth over when Luyanda bowled Sam Martin but Sean Pickles and skipper Michael O’Brien steadied things with a third wicket partnership of 48. There was another tidy spell from Jamie Middleton (2-35) and he made the breakthrough when he bowled Pickles (37) and 13 runs later he bowled O’Brien (15) to reduce the Leeds side to 92-4. Jack Wood and James Shipton then added 38 for the fifth wicket before Lee Wild had Wood (25) caught on the long on boundary by Alex Bowden. Wild (2-50) quickly removed Zac Lodge to put Selby on top as the visitors struggled to 144-6 in the 36th over but Shipton and Ben Danby rescued the situation for Whitkirk. A 72 run partnership for the seventh wicket turned the game round and was only ended when Danby was run out at the non strikers end after hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes in a vital 57. James Shipton (48) kept the scorboard ticking over before Bowden had him caught by Lee Wild and Josh Thompson (15*) hit some valuable late runs to lift Whitkirk to 244-9 at the close.
In reply Selby lost opener Rob Scarr in the first over but Alex Bowden and Lee Wild then added 46 for the second wicket with some stylish batting. Spinner Muhammed Ahmadzai ended the partnership when he bowled Bowden (17) in the 10th over. 12 runs later Michael O’Brien had Lee Wild (24) caught behind by Pickles and next ball he had Charlie Baird also caught behind to leave the home side in trouble on 59-4. Rob Peet joined Joe Bugg at the crease and they both batted sensibly to keep Selby in the game with a fifth wicket partnership of exactly 50 but O’Brien (3-50) struck again to trap Bugg (23) leg before. Tom Ellwood and Peet added a further 19 for the sixth wicket but the introduction of spinner Jack Wilson signalled the end for the home side. Peet’s defiant knock of 41was eventually ended when he was bowled by Wilson (4-12) in the 28th over as Selby slipped to a disappointing 152 all out with Ellwood left unbeaten on 23. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Streamline Taxis and bottom of the table Thirsk are the visitors to Sandhill Lane on Saturday.
Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two Ebor
Goole II 206 Selby II 209-9
In Division Two Selby second team travelled to Goole II and came away with a narrow one wicket win in a tight finish.
Batting first Goole lost an early wicket when Sam Coppin was bowled by Luke Berzins but the experienced Antony Gibbins held the early part of the innings together. There was good support from Ciaran Smith and Jacob Kennedy (16) but wickets fell at regular intervals with spinner Alex Langhan eventually having Gibbins (46) caught behind by Darrell Guy. Rob Jacobs (34) batted well until he was bowled by Kayden Lane as the home side slipped to 138-7 but there some late big hitting from Jack Knowles, who blasted 5 fours and 2 sixes, before Mark Hope had him caught for 43. Alex Langhan finished with the fine figures of 5-46 as Goole were bowled out in the 31st over for 206.
In reply Selby made a bad start when opener Darrell Guy was bowled by Jack Knowles in the first over but Graham Phillips and Mark Hope soon got the innings back on track with a second wicket partnership of 59. Jack Knowles (4-38) struck again to bowl Phillips (29) and later had Hope (36) caught behind by Sam Coppin which sparked a middle order collapse as the visitors slipped to 116-7. Tom Marritt (2-47) kept up the pressure but Oliver Steward and Luke Berzins steadied the ship with an eighth wicket partnership of 68. With victory in sight Steward was run out for exactly 50 and Berzins (41) was bowled by Gibbins to leave Selby on 188-9. The last pair of George Wells (8*) and Alex Langhan (7*) guided the visitors home in a tense finish with Langhan hitting the winning runs in the final over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Yorkshire Stove Solutions and the second team travel to league leaders Crossgates on Saturday.
Yorkshire Premier League North Division Four (Ebor)
Ovington II 123, Selby III 124-7
Selby third team continue to climb the Division Four table after a three wicket win at York side Ovington II.
Skipper Isaac Leung won the toss and asked Ovington to bat first and they lost a couple of early wickets including another diving catch from Neil Darley to dismiss Noah Morgan (12). Wickets then fell at regular intervals against some good Selby bowling with Alfie Harper (2-10), Nathan Dye (3-31) and Neil Darley (3-27) putting the visitors in charge. There was some dogged resistance from Lucas Moore (32) and Oli Craven (29) but Selby were satisfied with their work at the tea interval as the home side were bowled out for 123 in the last of their 40 overs.
Chasing the small total there was a disastrous start to the Selby reply when they crashed to 20-5 with four batsmen failing to score a run. Owen Price (3-39) and Ben Busby (3-29) did the damage but Alfie Laverack joined Isaac Leung to restore some sanity to proceedings. A sixth wicket partnership of 43 got Selby back on track but after Laverack (31) was dismissed by Gaurav Chandra there was still work to do. Neil Darley joined his skipper Leung and they calmly added 58 for the seventh wicket before Leung (37) became another victim for Price which left Darley (36*) to hit the winning runs in the 26th over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Percy & Barbara Gouldsbrough and the third team are at home to Thorpe Willoughby on Saturday.
Vale League Sunday Division
Heworth III 150, Selby IV 138
Selby fourth team returned to action on Sunday and they went down to a narrow 12 run defeat at top of the table Heworth III.
Batting first the home side made a solid start but after Alfie Laverack (2-31) caught and bowled Robin Kay (12) wickets fell at regular intervals. Tom Grant (41) was batting well until he was caught and bowled by Darren Hunter (2-29) and good spells from Alfie Harper (3-25) and Alex Hornostaj (2-11) kept the visitors just on top. There was a late revival from the York side with Alfie Sawdon (28) and Charlie Hallam (18) both frustrating the Selby attack and they lifted Heworth to 150 all out in the 38th over.
The Selby reply followed a similar pattern to the Heworth innings with several batsmen making a start but good bowling from Jamie Ross (3-24) and William Langworthy (3-19) kept the game in the balance. The visitors struggled to 75-7 but Alex Hornostaj and Darren Hunter added 55 for the eighth wicket before Alfie Sawdon bowled Hunter (48) in the 31st over. Jamie Ross returned to the attack to dismiss Sam Easthill but the last pair of Hornostaj (29*) and Andy Riley got within sight of the victory target but Riley (6) was run out in the 39th over to leave Selby 138 all out. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Richard Laycock and the fourth team are at home to Carlton Towers III on Sunday.
