third team win

Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West

Heworth I 261-6, Selby I 40

Selby first team’s difficult season in the Championship continued on Saturday when they crashed to a massive 221 run defeat at Heworth after being bowled out for their lowest score of the campaign.

The York side batted first after winning the toss and they lost an early wicket when pace bowler Luyanda Gasa trapped George Carlton leg before in the fourth over. Jamie Middleton then had the other opener Anul Karunaratne caught by Alex Bowden to reduce the home side to 24-2 but Aussie Harry Hauenstein gradually got on top of the bowling. After 25 overs Heworth were restricted to 78-2 thanks to another tight spell from Jamie Middleton who took 1-24 from his 13 over spell, but the home side began to increase the run rate in the second half of their innings. The Selby bowlers came in for some punishment as Hauenstein peppered the boundary with some stylish shots and he added 72 for the third wicket with Jack Wilkinson (17). There was more support for Hauenstein from Dan Walton (25) and Rich Walton (14) as the runs continued to flow. Tom Shepherd (3-57) eventually bowled Hauenstein in the 49th over for 165, which included 22 fours and 2 sixes, and he enabled Heworth to close on an imposing 261-6.

Chasing the big total Selby were soon reduced to 9-2 with Alex Bell having Matt Hoyle and Rob Scarr both caught behind by Rhys Hughes. The visitors struggled to 19-2 before Alex Rennie had Alex Bowden caught by Rich Walton to spark a dramatic middle order collapse which saw Selby crash to a desperate 19-7. Darrell Guy did start a mini recovery with two boundaries in his 13 but he became another victim for Alex Bell who finished with 5-23. Alex Rennie (4-12) did the damage at the other end as Selby were bowled out for just 40 in the 17th over. The heavy defeat means Selby drop to the bottom of the table.
