A win and a defeat

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two Ebor

Londesborough Park II 68, Selby II 71-1

Selby second team got their season underway with a comfortable and speedy nine wicket win at Londesborough Park II.

Skipper Darrell Guy won the toss and asked the home side to bat first and wickets were soon falling with Jamie Middleton grabbing the first wicket when he had opener Tom Williamson caught behind by Guy. New recruit Simon Tolson soon removed the other opener Euan Walker to reduce the home side to 17-2. Londesborough Park never really recovered from the bad start as wickets continued to fall with smart catches taken Luke Berzins, Mark Hope and Graham Phillips. Middleton took 4-18 from his six overs and Tolson took 2-32 from his eight over spell as the home side struggled to 32-6. Daniel Howard and Ben Lewis did provide some resistance and they added 32 for the seventh wicket before Rhys Roddick bowled Lewis for 13. Howard hit 2 fours and 2 big sixes in his 22 before he was bowled by Caspar Gray as the Park innings fizzled out. Gray took 2-15 and Roddick 2-3 to mop up the tail as the home side were bowled out for just 68 in the 22nd over.

Chasing the small total Selby openers Graham Phillips and Luke Berzins made a steady start but with the total on 17 Darren Moody bowled Berzins (3) which brought Gareth Pearce in to join Phillips. There were few problems for the visitors after this with Phillips firing seven boundaries in his unbeaten 43 and there was good support from Pearce (20*) as Selby reached the victory target in the 14th over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Wolf Cricket and cricket returns to Sandhill Lane on Saturday when Selby are at home to Goole II.

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Four Ebor

Thorner Mexborough II 293-8 Selby III 184-9

It was a tough start for Selby third team in Division Four when they were set a big total to chase at Thorner II and they went down to a 109 run defeat.

The Leeds side batted first and there was a dramatic start to the game when with his first ball Richard Waterton had opener Shazad Rafiq neatly caught in the deep by Sam Mason. The home side soon recovered and took control with a second wicket partnership of 154 between Adnan Fazil and Hammad Virk. Selby eventually made the breakthrough when new signing Callum Brownlie had Virk (94) stumped by Gareth Harvey. Iwan White then had Fazil (88) caught by skipper Isaac Leung as the visitors fought back. Stan Bugg had a tidy spell of 2-36 from his ten overs and Iwan White went on to take 4-44 but late runs were added by Awais Khan (39*) and Tahir Khan (13*) and they enabled Thorner to close on a massive 293-8 from their 40 overs.

In reply Selby lost early wickets with Tahir Karim (2-15) and Awais Khan (3-34) doing the damage as the visitors slumped to 38-6. Alex Hornostaj (17) and Stan Bugg stopped the rot with a seventh wicket partnership of 22 and Richard Waterton joined Bugg to continue the spirited recovery. An impressive eighth wicket partnership of 77 was ended by Hammad Virk when he bowled Bugg for a solid 35 but Waterton continued to punish any loose bowling and with support from George Wells (13) he added 31 for the ninth wicket. Selby closed on a very respectable 184-9 with Waterton finishing unbeaten on a superb unbeaten 74, which included 10 fours and 2 sixes. Selby play Ovington II on Saturday at Sandhill Lane.

Selby first team get their season underway in Championship West on Saturday when they travel to Whitkirk and the fourth team start their season in the new Vale Sunday Division when they travel to Dunnington.
