Skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and decided to bat first but after one over a rain shower caused a short delay but on the resumption openers Matt Hoyle and Alex Bowden were soon scoring quickly and running expertly between the wickets. The fifty partnership arrived in the 11th over and the century partnership in 20th over. The Malton bowlers and fielders had to work hard on a very quick outfield and they used seven different bowlers in an attempt to stem the flow of runs. A massive opening partnership of 179 was eventually ended by spinner Shaun Harland when he had Bowden caught on the mid wicket boundary by Tom Fairburn for 84, which included 15 boundaries. Corey Paull joined Hoyle and they kept the runs flowing in a second wicket partnership of 42 before Harland bowled Paull (25) in the 42nd over. Harland struck again to end Hoyle’s superb knock when he was caught in the deep for 110, which included 10 boundaries. Rob Scarr chipped in with a quick 14 but wickets fell towards the end of the innings with Harland finishing with 6-58 from his 9 overs as Selby closed on 269-8 from their 50 overs.

Chasing the big total Malton were also scoring quickly with Shaun Harland leading the way in a first wicket partnership of 58 before Jamie Middleton made the vital breakthrough when he trapped Ryan Wharton (17) leg before. Left arm spinner Subhoda Premarathne joined the attack and with his first ball he dismissed the dangerous Harland (36) as the visitors began to get on top. Tom Fairburn (14), Matt Turnbull (27) and Tom Bumby (13) all made good starts but Premarathne (4-52) kept Selby on top with good catches taken by Kayden Lane and Matt Hoyle. Luke Smith batted well and he kept the home side in the game until Alex Bowden had him caught in the deep by Hoyle for 51. Lee Wild also picked up a wicket but Bowden expertly mopped up the tail and he finished with 4-20 as Malton were bowled out for 220 in the 46th over. Ledsham 91 all out, Selby II 92-2

Selby second team bounced back from last week's heavy defeat at Goole with a comfortable eight wicket win over Ledsham at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first Ledsham lost early wickets to Sam Dunn (4-39) and Tom Shepherd (3-45) and they were quickly reduced to 38-5 but there was a mid innings revival from Freddie Dewhirst (19) and Adam Rothera (22). Liam Fox finished unbeaten on 16 but spinner Alex Langhan kept Selby in control and he took 3-6 as the visitors were bowled out for 91 in the 25th over.

In reply Selby made a solid start with an opening partnership of 35 from Graham Phillips and Mike Lane. Adam Rothera had Phillips (27) caught by Jake Wright but Gareth Pearce hit a quick 15 before Liam Fox had him caught by Steven Miller. There were no further problems for the home side as Mike Lane (31*) and George Wells (12*) saw Selby home in the 20th over. Selby III 127 all out, Ben Johnson 129-2

It was another difficult afternoon for the young Selby third team when they went down to an eight wicket defeat to Ben Johnson at Escrick Park.

Batting first after losing the toss Selby made a bad start when Steve Sherwood was run out with only nine runs on the board. A devastating spell from Akash Shaik (5-19) put the home side in control but Chris Harkin worked hard for his 16. Selby struggled to 78-9 and an early finish loomed but Gareth Harvey and Toby Settle both batted bravely and they put on 49 for the last wicket. Dave Wells ended the partnership when he trapped Settle (24) leg before and Harvey finished unbeaten on 39 as Selby were bowled out for 127 in the 36th over.

In reply Ben Johnson were soon on top after an opening partnership of 47 between Paul Anderson and Sunny Shome. Darren Hunter (2-34) did make a breakthrough when he had Shome caught for 18 and he later dismissed Anderson (32) when he was caught behind by Gareth Harvey. Dave Wells (55) and Rakesh Huded (18*) then steered Ben Johnson home in the 29th over. Selby play Scholes II at Sandhill Lane on Saturday.

Sunday Vale Division One

Sheriff Hutton Bridge 192 all out, Selby IV 180 all out

Selby fourth team travelled to Sheriff Hutton Bridge on Sunday and they produced a battling performance but they went down to a narrow 12 run defeat.

Batting first after winning the toss Bridge batted solidly with opener David Powell hitting 31. Seth Wratten took a couple of wickets and skipper Sam Easthill (3-14) slowed down the run rate as the home side were reduced to 134-8. Will Walker (17*) and Andrew Bell 22 both batted well and a 58 run partnership lifted Bridge to a useful 192 all out.

The early part of the Selby reply revolved around James Stead (27) and Alfie Laverack (28) but Zac Powell (3-53) bowled well to keep the home side just on top. Sam Easthill hit 5 boundaries in his 30 to keep the visitors in the game and the last pair of Richard Mustill (30*) and Seth Wratten (19) almost guided Selby home but they were bowled out for 180 in the 39th over which did earn them 4 batting points. Selby are at home to Heworth IV on Sunday.
