North Cave Coal Exporters I 139 all out Selby I 140-7

Selby first team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday with a three wicket win at newly promoted side North Cave Coal Exporters.

Skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and asked the home side to bat first and they made a solid but slow start against some tight bowling from Jamie Middleton and Tom Shepherd with Middleton going on to concede just 24 runs from his 13 overs.. Left arm spinner Subhoda Premarathne made the breakthrough when he bowled Jaison Matthews (18) in the 12th over but James Forrester joined James Barker and they added 38 for the second wicket. The introduction of Lee Wild sparked a middle order collapse after he bowled Forrester (13) in the 24th over. Wickets then tumbled with Wild going on to take 5-44 from his 13 overs and skipper Bowden (2-18) kept up the pressure at the other end. Premarathne (3-32) wrapped up the tail as the home side were bowled out in the 46th over for 139 with opener Barker finishing unbeaten on 74.

.In reply Selby also made a solid start with an opening partnership of 34 between Layton Hallam and Alex Bowden which was ended when Liam Walker had Hallam (16) caught in the deep. Ethan Steel then joined the bowling attack and he took the vital wickets of Corey Paull and Alex Bowden (29) as Selby slipped to 65-3 in the 18th over. Joe Bugg (26) kept the visitors just on top but Matthews (2-45) and Adam Boasman (2-27) continued to make life difficult for Selby when they were reduced to 118-7. Subhoda Premarathne (12*) and Kayden Lane (6*) eventually guided Selby home in the 29th over with their run chase helped by 33 extras. Goole II 260-5 Selby II 178 all out

Cricket returned to Sandhill Lane on Saturday but it was another difficult afternoon for Selby second team when they went down to an 82 run defeat to Goole II after being set a massive total to chase.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a good looking track and it proved to be a wise decision as they were soon scoring quickly with opener Craig Chafer again in top form. Chafer did lose opening partner Paul Everett with the total on 35 when Rhys Roddick had him caught by Matt Hoyle. Neil Foster joined Chafer and they added 167 for second wicket to put Goole in control. Iwan White eventually ended the partnership when he bowled Foster (60) but Sam Copping hit a quick 20 before becoming another victim for White. Craig Chafer’s impressive innings came to an end in the 44th over when White had him caught by Hoyle for a classy 133, which included 16 fours and a six. Iwan White finished with 4-11 from his four overs as Goole closed on an imposing 260-5.

Chasing the big total Selby lost an early wicket when James Kerr had Graham Phillips caught by Will O’Donnell. Ben Scorah (3-19) then grabbed a couple of quick wickets to leave the home side wobbling on 18-3. Matt Hoyle held the innings together and he had good support from Iwan White (27) and Darrell Guy (11) as the home side recovered. Rob Jacobs (2-47) eventually ended Hoyle’s stylish knock when he was caught on the mid wicket boundary by Copping for 94, which included 10 fours and a six. There was some late big hitting from Sam Easthill (14) but Selby were bowled out for 178 in the 41st over. Yorkshire Premier League North Division Four Ebor

Selby III 172-9, Church Fenton II 176-4

The third team were also in action at Sandhill Lane but they went down to a six wicket defeat to Church Fenton II despite a good batting performance.

Batting first after losing the toss Selby lost a couple of early wickets but Steve Sherwood and Sam Mason added 59 for the third wicket. Callum Ward (2-34) dismissed Mason (37) and Sherwood (31) but Alex Hornostaj (24), Tom Rich (18) and Iain Stamper (22) kept the scoreboard ticking over. Stephen Bell (4-32) bowled well to keep the run rate down and Chris Harkin finished unbeaten on 10 as the home side closed on a useful 172-9 from their 40 overs.

In reply Church Fenton openers Stuart Bell and Finlay Walton made a good start with an opening partnership of 36 which was ended by Dan Catterall when he had Bell (11) caught behind by Gareth Harvey. Walton continued to bat powerfully and despite wickets for Martyn Rhodes and Catterall (2-66) the visitors began to get on top. Alex Hornostaj joined the attack to dismiss Walton for 58, which included 7 fours and 2 sixes, but Dane Emmott (48*) and Mick Dancer (28*) comfortably steered Church Fenton home in the 31st over. Selby fourth team’s start to the season on Sunday at South Milford was a victim of the weather and they are at home to Sheriff Hutton Bridge on Sunday.
