Century for Darrell Guy

Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West

Dunnington I 287-4, Selby I 180

Selby first team’s run of difficult fixtures continued on Saturday when they travelled to Dunnington and went down to a 107 run defeat after being set a big total to chase.

The home side won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a good looking track and openers Oliver Sherwood and Harry Griffiths gave them a good start. An opening partnership of 61 was ended by Luyanda Gasa when he had Griffiths (29) superbly caught by Rob Scarr in the gully. Sri Lankan Irosh Samarasooriya joined Sherwood and they added 52 for the second wicket before Caspar Gray bowled Sherwood (34) in the 26th over. Samarasooriya then took control and produced some impressive batting and with good support from Dan Barrett the run rate began to increase as the Selby bowlers and fielders had to work hard on a quick outfield. A 118 run partnership for the third wicket put Dunnington in control but there was some relief for Selby when Luyanda Gasa returned to the attack to have Barrett (36) caught behind by Charlie Baird. Luyanda (3-61) did grab another wicket when he bowled Jack Bolam (10) but Samarasooriya continued to punish the Selby attack as he hit 22 fours and a six in his unbeaten 146 and he enabled the home side to close on a massive 287-4 from their 50 overs.

Chasing the imposing total there was an early setback for the visitors when pace bowler Seth Bodill had Matt Hoyle caught behind by Dan Barrett. Skipper Alex Bowden and Rob Scarr weathered the early storm and soon began to get on top of the bowling with good shots and smart running between the wickets. In the 20th over Selby were still in the game with the score on 110 but spinner Cam Hall made a vital breakthrough when he bowled Bowden for a stylish 62, which included 10 boundaries. Scarr continued to bat well but he became another victim for Hall when he was bowled for 58 as Selby’s challenge faded. Lee Wild hit a rapid 14 but Adam Iyer (2-27) kept up the pressure and Cam Hall finished with 7-57 as the visitors slipped to 180 all out in the 36th over. Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two Ebor

Selby II 272-8, Wheldrake I 119

In Division Two Selby second team’s revival continued with a massive 153 run win against Wheldrake at Sandhill Lane with the highlight being an unbeaten century from skipper Darrell Guy.

Selby batted first after winning the toss and the early part of the innings revolved around Gareth Pearce after Steve Beales had removed openers Graham Phillips (14) and Layton Hallam (14). Pearce stroked 9 boundaries in his brisk 52 but when Karthikeyan Sathiyaseelan had him caught Selby were reduced to 98-5. More wickets for Sathiyaseelan (4-54) left the home side in trouble at 148-8 but Alex Langhan joined skipper Darrell Guy to rescue the innings. Club statisticians were checking the record books after a remarkable ninth wicket partnership of 124 with Guy hitting 11 fours and 6 sixes in his unbeaten 109 and Langhan was unbeaten on 37 as Selby closed on a very useful 272-8.

In reply Wheldrake did make a reasonable start but after George Wells had Sanket Turang (25) caught by Sam Easthill wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Stan Bugg picked up a wicket and Jamie Middleton took 2-18 from his six over spell as Selby took control. Several Wheldrake batsmen reached double figures but they never threatened Selby’s big total as spinner Alex Langhan worked his way through the visitors batting. Langhan finished with the fine figures of 6-23 as Wheldrake were bowled out for 119 in the 32nd over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Selby Foods and the second team travel to Scholes I on Saturday.

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Four Ebor

Drax II 200, Selby III 179

Selby third team’s revival in Division Four came to an end on Saturday when they went down to a 21 run defeat to Drax II at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first after winning the toss Drax openers Luke Edwards and Mike Priestley batted solidly and they added 36 for the first wicket before Alfie Harper had Edwards (18) caught behind by Gareth Harvey. Richard Waterton then bowled Priestley (15) as the visitors struggled to 46-3. Paul Vickers and Jordan Lissenburg got the innings back on track with a fourth wicket partnership 71 which was ended when Vickers was run out for 30. Lissenburg went on to hit 8 fours and a six in his 58 before Neil Darley (3-59) had him caught and there were valuable late runs from Jack Derham (16*) and Jack Priestley (13). Nathan Dye finished with 4-51 as Drax were bowled out in the 39th over for exactly 200.

The Selby reply was dominated by opener Steve Sherwood who had good partnerships with Alfie Laverack (18) and Alfie Harper but wickets for Jack Derham (2-53) and Ethan Umbo kept the visitors just on top. Jack Priestley took the vital wicket of Sherwood (50) and Harper (37) was trapped leg before by Wes Coultas as a close finish loomed. Mike Lane (29) and Alex Hornostaj (17) kept Selby in the game but a late blast from Paul Vickers (4-6) saw the home side bowled out for 179 in the last over.
