Selby CC v Whitley Bridge CC in Alison Trophy Thriller

Under 15s – Alison Trophy (Round 1)

Selby CC Under 15s booked their place in the next round of the Alison Trophy with a gritty 47-run victory over Whitley Bridge in an entertaining cup tie played at home on Tuesday evening.

Batting first, Selby posted 126 for 5 from their 20 overs, built around excellent contributions from the two Dylans. Dylan Singh was the top scorer with a composed 37 off 38 balls, while Dylan Davies played a crucial supporting role, hitting a rapid 27 from just 21 deliveries to lift the home side’s total.

Whitley Bridge bowled with control throughout, with Harry Calam, R Hayburn, and T Bannister each keeping Selby’s middle order in check. Extras, however, proved costly, allowing Selby to cross the 100-run mark despite regular breakthroughs.

In reply, Whitley Bridge found runs hard to come by against a disciplined Selby attack. Seth Wratten was the standout, delivering an outstanding four-over spell that yielded 2 wickets for just 3 runs, including 3 maidens. He was ably supported by Ed Lockwood, who also claimed 2 wickets, and Dylan Davies, who chipped in with 1 for 4 in another tight spell.

A special mention goes to James Stead, who took on wicketkeeping duties for the first time at this level and produced a commendable performance behind the stumps.

Despite determined efforts from I Keane, H Calam, and M Barnett, Whitley Bridge fell just short, finishing on 79, as Selby’s bowlers held their nerve and the fielders backed them up with safe hands and alert reactions—including 3 run-outs by J Hunter.

This victory sees Selby advance to Round 2 of the Alison Trophy, with confidence boosted by a true team effort across all departments.

Clinical Chase Sees Pledwick U13 Overcome Spirited Selby in Entertaining Encounter

A confident all-round performance from Pledwick Under 13s saw them secure a convincing nine-wicket win over Selby in a high-scoring and well-contested junior fixture on Wednesday evening.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Selby made a promising start with opener Josh Colley anchoring the innings with a composed 28 off 35 balls, seeing off the early pressure from Pledwick’s opening bowlers. He was well supported in the middle order by Josh Stonehouse (17 not out) and Ed Johnson (15 not out), who rotated the strike effectively in the closing overs. A particularly entertaining cameo from Ollie Kierans (26 off 13) helped lift Selby to a competitive 119 for 4 from their 20 overs.

Pledwick's bowlers shared the workload well, with T Wilson and J Butterfield delivering tight spells, the latter picking up three wickets in a devastating 18th over that slowed Selby’s momentum just when they looked poised to accelerate. Butterfield finished with impressive figures, clean-bowling two and grabbing a third via a smart catch by A Smith.

In reply, Pledwick made their intentions clear from the outset, maintaining a strong run rate throughout. The top order looked composed and clinical, with T Wilson leading the way with a brisk 30+ (exact runs not listed), ably supported by C Byram and A Smith, both of whom found the boundary regularly and rotated the strike well. The home side chased down the target with 3.3 overs to spare, finishing on 120 for 1 in 16.3 overs.

Selby’s bowlers gave opportunities to all ten players, reflecting the developmental nature of junior cricket. The only wicket to fall came courtesy of Ben Rosher, with a well-taken catch by Elijah McHale, who together with Ollie Kierans also impressed behind the stumps. Toby Settle bowled a maiden over early on and was a standout with the ball, while Ed Johnson earned praise for his committed work in the field, cutting off several well-struck shots to save valuable runs.

Despite the result, both teams can take positives from the match. Selby’s batting depth and intent were clear, while Pledwick demonstrated a polished, team-focused approach in all departments.

The game was played in an excellent spirit and offered plenty of encouragement for coaches and spectators alike as both sides look ahead to their upcoming fixtures.

Result: Pledwick CC U13 (120/1 in 16.3 overs) beat Selby CC U13 (119/4 in 20 overs) by 9 wickets

Selby Academy XI Edge Dunnington Colts in Thrilling Foss Evening League Clash

Selby CC Academy XI produced a composed and resilient performance to overcome a determined Dunnington Colts side by six runs in an exciting Division 4 Foss Evening League encounter.

Batting first, Selby posted a competitive 118 for 5 from their allotted 16 overs, underpinned by a superb innings from Harry Huddlestone, who top-scored with a fluent 50 off 34 balls, including nine boundaries. His innings held the innings together through the middle overs and laid the foundation for a late surge.

Huddlestone received useful support from Joe Bugg (24 off 20) and Sam Easthill (7), while Alfie Harper finished unbeaten, steering the innings through its final phase. Dunnington’s bowling attack was led by S Dasari, who claimed 2 for 15, including a key LBW and a clean bowled dismissal during a tidy spell. J McClean and J Patterson also chipped in with a wicket apiece, helping restrict Selby from pushing beyond 120.

In reply, Dunnington’s chase got off to a solid start but wobbled in the middle overs after the loss of two quick wickets to Mark Hope, who removed both A Hodson (28 off 23) and N Sharma in the same over. Hodson’s fluent strokeplay had included a six and three fours, and his dismissal was a turning point.

The middle-order pairing of C Patterson (22) and J Wood (30 off 20) reignited the innings, with Wood in particular striking five boundaries to keep Dunnington in the hunt. The pair took Dunnington within touching distance of the target, but disciplined bowling from Selby at the death—especially from Oliver Steward, who claimed the final wicket—kept their noses in front.

The visitors finished on 112 for 5, just six runs short of their target in what was a well-fought contest.

Selby’s bowlers held their nerve in the final overs despite some costly extras, and a key run-out chance missed by the batting side earlier in the game may have proved crucial in the final reckoning.

The match was played in great spirit and provided excellent entertainment for the midweek crowd, with both sides showcasing promising young talent in all areas of the game.

Result: Selby CC Academy XI (118/5 in 16 overs) beat Dunnington Colts (112 for 5 from their 16 overs) by 6 runs
