First team win

Yorkshire Premier League North Championship West

Selby I 248-9 Studley Royal 186

Selby first team’s difficult season in the Championship ended on a positive note with a 62 run win over Studley Royal at Sandhill Lane on Saturday.

Skipper Alex Bowden won the toss and elected to bat first and they made a good start with an opening partnership of 59 from Tom Shepherd and Alex Bowden which was ended by Seth Watson when he had Shepherd (16) caught by Leo Wilson. Bowden again looked in good form but spinner Louie Wilson (2-31) had him stumped by Sean Nicholson for a brisk 41. The rest of the innings followed a similar pattern with batsmen chipping in with solid contributions, including Rob Peet (10), Layton Hallam (22) and Oliver Steward (14). Matty Clark increased the run rate when he fired 4 fours and 2 sixes in his rapid 39 which was ended by Austin Hamilton (4-61). Luke Berzins (23) and Luyanda Gasa (15*) hit valuable late runs as Selby closed on a useful 248-9, which was boosted by 57 extras.

In reply the Ripon based side lost an early wicket when pace bowler Luyanda Gasa bowled Rob Nicholson and with the total on 19 Luyanda Gasa struck again when he bowled Louie Wilson (12). Harding held the innings together and he added 37 for the third wicket with Leo Wilson before Jamie Middleton caught and bowled Wilson (20). Austin Hamilton joined Harding and they added 47 for the fourth wicket but Alex Bowden joined the attack to have Hamilton (28) caught in the deep by Rob Peet. There was more support for Harding from Matt Coad but in a dramatic 30th over Bowden trapped Harding (71) leg before and then bowled Coad (19) to reduce the visitors to 159-6. The Studley Royal innings lost momentum with Bowden taking 5-50 from his 13 over spell and there were wickets for Tom Shepherd and Luke Berzins as the visitors were bowled out in the 40th over for 186. Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two (Ebor)

Woodhouse Grange III 176-9, Selby II 152-8

In Division Two Selby second team finished their season with a 24 run defeat at Woodhouse Grange III in a rain affected game.

Batting first after winning the toss Grange made a bad start with George Wells (4-19) taking early wickets as the home side struggled to 23-3. Philip Stothard and James Barr steadied things with a fourth wicket partnership of 72 which was ended by Caspar Gray when he bowled Barr (14). A rain delay reduced the game to 35 overs per side but Stothard continued to bat powerfully and he hit a vital 87 before he was dismissed by Rhys Roddick (3-31) and he enabled the home side to close on 176-9.

In reply Selby also lost an early wicket but Sam Dunn held the early part of the innings together as wickets fell at the other end despite a third wicket partnership of 37 with skipper Darrell Guy (11). Harry Shipley (3-26) kept Grange on top and when Riley Cooper (2-28) bowled Sam Dunn (34) the visitors were reduced to 74-6. Mike Lane and James Thackray staged a good recovery and they added 54 for the eighth wicket before Matt Shepherd had Thackray (20) caught by Alex Rutherford. Mike Lane finished unbeaten on 49 as Selby closed on 152-8 which earned them a couple of batting points. The second team finished in a respectable fifth place.

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Four (Ebor)

Selby III 211-7, Saxton II 214-4

In Division Four Selby third team finished their season with a good batting performance but it wasn’t enough to prevent a six wicket defeat at Saxton II.

Batting first after losing the toss Selby lost an early wicket when William Sibson had Steve Sherwood caught but Sam Mason and Iwan White got the innings back on track with a second wicket partnership of 59. Iwan White was caught for a rapid 32 and spinner Dave Buck eventually bowled Sam Mason for a solid 66 but Scott Smith kept the runs flowing. Smith blasted 9 fours and 3 sixes before he was bowled by Tim Collyer for 74 and there was good support from Gareth Harvey (13) as the visitors closed on a useful 211-7 from their 40 overs.

Chasing the big total Saxton needed a good start and they got it from Gareth Bottomley and Jalandhar Veerepalli who put on 65 for the first wicket. Nathan Dye made the breakthrough when he had Bottomley (43) caught by Iwan White but Michael Horton (50) joined Veerepalli and they kept Saxton in control. A second wicket partnership of 126 virtually guaranteed a Saxton win despite a couple of late wickets from Iwan White (2-27). Veerepalli finished unbeaten on 75 as the home side reached the victory target in the 30th over. The defeat means the third team finished in eighth place.
