Better day on Sunday - first win for third team

York Senior League Division Two Ebor

Selby I 110 Londesborough Park 111-3

Selby first team travelled to second in the table Londesborough Park and they slumped to a disappointing seven wicket defeat.

The home side won the toss and asked Selby to bat first and once again they made a good start with an opening partnership of 54 between skipper Matt Hoyle and Alex Bowden and they looked to be building the foundations of a competitive total. The introduction of James Beevers dramatically changed the game when he had Bowden caught by Scott Hardwick for 32 and this sparked an alarming collapse. Martin Pearson trapped Hoyle (25) leg before and Beevers ripped through the middle order to reduce Selby to 85-7. Darrell Guy (13) held up the Londesborough Park attack but the visitors were bowled out for just 110 in the 31st over with James Beevers finishing with 7-20 and Martin Pearson 3-28.

In reply the home side’s openers Ben Shingles and James Beevers made a solid start and progressed steadily to 29 before Tom Shepherd made the breakthrough when he had Shingles (10) caught by James Dugher. Beevers (13) followed in the next over when Luke Berzins had him caught and when Lucas Stephenson was run out by Jamie Pickles the home side were reduced to 30-3. Any hope of Selby getting anything out of the game were ended by Charles Rook and Martin Pearson who soon got on top of the bowling with some powerful batting. Rook fired 8 fours and a six in his unbeaten 50 and Pearson was unbeaten on 32 as Londesborough Park knocked off the runs in the 28th over. Despite the defeat Selby remain in third place but they will need to recover quickly when they play Bilton in Ainsty at Sandhill Lane on Saturday. Thanks go to match ball sponsor David Earl.

York Senior League Division Four Ebor

Saxton I 248-8 Selby II 186-8

In Division Four Selby second team had another tough afternoon when they went down to a 69 run defeat to Saxton I in a high scoring game at Sandhill Lane but there was an improved batting performance which earned them two batting points.

The visitors, who were relegated from Division Three last season, won the toss and elected to bat first and they were soon scoring quickly with Dan Appleby and Freddie Moore putting on 35 for the first wicket before Moore was run out. There was a tight 12 over spell from Mark Redshaw but Appleby dominated the run scoring and he had good support from James Maxwell in a second wicket partnership of 87 which was ended by the spin of Isaac Leung who had Maxwell (11) caught by Adam Walters. Appleby continued to bat powerfully and he looked to be closing in on a century until he was trapped leg before by Leung (3-40) for 95. Graham Phillips also took a couple of wickets as the visitors slipped to 147-5 but Matthew Hutton (28) and Venkat Musku (33) added 60 for the sixth wicket to put Saxton back on top. Mike Lane (2-21) picked up a couple of late wickets but Nick Dee hit a quick unbeaten 19 to lift the visitors to a challenging 248-8 at the close.

Chasing the big total Selby lost an early wicket but Graham Phillips and Oliver Steward took the score to 23 but Phillips (15) was dismissed by Ian Cunningham and when Isaac Leung fell shortly after the home side were struggling on 29-3. Gareth Harvey then attacked the bowling and with good support from Steward he got Selby back in contention. A 67 run partnership for the fourth wicket was ended when Steward was run out for 17 and Harvey followed shortly after when he was unluckily run out at the non strikers end for a powerful 56, which included 7 boundaries. 14 year old brothers Harry (10) and Jack Huddlestone both batted impressively in a sixth wicket partnership of 31 and a seventh wicket partnership of 50 between Jack Huddlestone (30) and Mike Lane (28 n.o.) got Selby within sight of a couple of batting points. Mike Dugher hit a four and a two from the final over to salvage something from the game as Selby closed 186-8. Selby travel to league newcomers Fairburn II on Saturday.

York Vale League Division Three

Selby III 237-7, Heworth IV 175

Selby third team registered their first win of the season on Sunday when they travelled to Heworth IV and won by 62 runs in a high scoring game.

Batting first Selby were soon scoring quickly despite losing an early wicket with the innings dominated by a 130 run partnership for the second wicket between Jack Huddlestone and Sam Easthill. Paul Whitley ended the partnership when he trapped Easthill (54) leg before but Jack Huddlestone was joined by brother Harry (19) and they added 44 for the third wicket. Jack Huddlestone was eventually dismissed for an impressive 73 but father Ian Huddlestone kept the runs flowing when he thrashed a quick unbeaten 30 as Selby closed on 237-7 which was boosted by 39 extras.

Selby made the perfect start when the York side replied when Casper Gray bowled opener Steve Sissons with the first ball of the innings. In a superb spell young bowler Gray demolished the early order and he took 5-10 from his six overs as Heworth crashed to 41-5 and the game looked to be over as a contest. The home side fought back in fine style with skipper Paul Whitley and Olly Mair both batting well and they gradually got Heworth back in contention with a sixth wicket partnership of 92. Joe Bugg made the breakthrough when he had Mair (44) caught by Sam Easthill but Whitley kept the scoreboard ticking over. Dan McLoughlin eventually dismissed Whitley (62) as the home sides’s challenge faded and they were bowled out for 175 in the 38th over.

Edward Readman Memorial Trophy

Selby I 168-9, Pocklington I 150

Selby first team had a better day on Sunday when they beat first division side Pocklington by 18 runs in the second round of the Readman Trophy at Sandhill Lane.

Batting first the home side made a good start with quick runs from Jamie Pickles (22) and Darrell Guy (24). Alex Bowden fired 4 fours and a six in his 44 and Adam Walters hit 5 fours in his 29 but Ian Gladstone slowed down the run rate with his spell of 4-20. Selby closed on a competitive total of 168-9 from their 20 overs.

The visitors made a decent start with the innings dominated by Dan Littlewood (54) and he had good support from Neal Jackson (20) and Matt Atkinson (16). James Dugher, Alex Langhan, Mark Redshaw and Tom Shepherd all picked up wickets as Selby remained just on top. Dan Croft kept Pocklington in the game with an unbeaten 35 but they were restricted to 150-4 at the close.
