In Division Four Selby second team had a better day when they registered their first win of the season with a 118 run victory over Drax II at Sandhill Lane.
Play was able to start on time thanks to hard work from groundsman Malcolm Bowden and the visitors won the toss and asked Selby to bat first. Run scoring was difficult early on with good spells from Erin Thomas and Jake Powell (2-33). Selby lost Oliver Steward with the score on 11 but Mike Lane (17) joined skipper Graham Phillips and they added 47 for the second wicket. Phillips and Chris Harkin gradually increased the run rate and a 79 run partnership for the third wicket put the home side on top. After Harkin was dismissed for 32 the innings revolved around Phillips who fired 7 fours and 2 sixes before Jake Powell had him caught for a powerful 87. Erin Thomas took 4-39 from her 12 overs as Selby closed on a useful 178-7.
In reply Drax made a solid start thanks to openers Lewis Thomas (10) and Paul Vickers (18) but after they were both dismissed by Nathan Dye (3-12) wickets then fell at regular intervals. Mark Redshaw (2-25) and Mike Lane (2-7) kept Selby in control and 13 year old Kayden Lane picked up his first wicket in senior cricket. There was some gritty resistance from Liam Smith (11) but a couple of wickets from spinner Graham Phillips wrapped the game up as Drax were bowled out for 60 in the 33rd over. The win lifts Selby up to eighth in the table and they travel to Hillam & Monk Fryston II on Saturday.
