There was an improved batting display from Selby third team when they returned to league action but it wasn’t enough to prevent a five wicket defeat to Stamford Bridge IV at Sandhill Lane.

The visitors won the toss and they asked Selby to bat first and openers Jack Huddlestone and Richard Mustill gave them a good start against some tight bowling from Matthew Breare and Isobel Dwyer. Spinner Sam Browne ended the partnership when he bowled Mustill for 21 and shortly after he dismissed Huddlestone for 11 to leave the home side on 39-2. Aidan Pearce and Stuart Dearnley (10) got Selby back on track with Pearce looking in good form but he was trapped leg before by Dave Quick for 22. Browne (6-25) sparked a collapse with three wickets falling with the score on 73 but young batsmen Joe Bugg (10) and Caspar Gray (11) staged a good recovery with some impressive batting. Selby were eventually bowled out for 102 in the 39th over.

In reply the visitors made slow progress against some tight bowling from Caspar Gray and Mike Thorpe and it was Thorpe who took the first wicket in the 11th over when he dismissed Martyn Stevens (11). Stamford Bridge then took control of the game when Adam Willcock and Brad Towse added 44 for the second wicket. Joe Bugg (2-15) got Selby back in the game when he bowled Towse (18) and then dismissed Willcock for 40. Caspar Gray (2-20) picked up two wickets but Seb Ackerley (22 n.o.) steered the visitors home in the 30th over. Selby are in action on Sunday when they travel to Bolton Percy III.
