Selby third team returned to winning ways in the York Vale League with a thrilling two run win over Thorpe Willoughby II in a low scoring game at Sandhill Lane.
Batting first the home side lost early wickets with Andy Jackson (4-12) doing the damage and Dave Watson taking 1-14 from his twelve overs. Opener Malcolm Bowden held the innings together but Selby were struggling badly at 26-5 until the experienced Mike Thorpe joined Bowden and they added 40 vital runs for the sixth wicket. Bowden was eventually run out for 29 and Mike Thorpe finished unbeaten on 18 as Selby closed on 76-9 with Steve Jackson taking 2-19.
The Thorpe reply was similar to the Selby innings with early wickets falling and it was Dan McLoughlin who put the home side in with a chance when he took 4-28 with young bowler Caspar Gray also taking a wicket. Kris Powell (11) kept Thorpe in the game but they struggled to 28-5. Loggy Stones and Kevin Claxton (11) added 17 for the sixth wicket as the visitors fought back but at 46-7 the game was in the balance. Dave Watson joined Stones and they took the score to 61 before Jack Mustill had Stones caught for a gritty 10. The tension mounted as Mustill struck again but Watson (18) looked to be steering the visitors home until Mustill (3-7) had him stumped by Bowden to leave Thorpe 74 all out in a dramatic finish. Selby have a week off on Saturday and they return to action on July 10th when Bolton Percy IV are the visitors to Sandhill Lane.
