Selby win in nail biting semi-final against Hensall

Selby win in nail biting semi-final against Hensall

It was the first of a double header against Hensall as the young Selby side made the short trip for the semi-final of the Yorkshire Car Company Cup. This was expected to be a closely matched game and so it proved as Selby prevailed in a low scoring contest by 3 wickets.

Hensall won the toss and opted to bat against a well drilled Selby bowling attack and opening bowling pair Joe Bugg and Rhys Roddick (2 for 9 in 4 overs) bowled with pace and accuracy and in Roddick’s first over he took the opening wicket with a smart catch from Jack Huddlestone to leave Hensall on 1 for 1. This brought in Charlie Cass who with Hensall’s opener Charlie Haller started to build a good partnership as they put on 26 for the 2nd wicket but it was Roddick who returned into the attack and superbly bowled Haller (4). The Selby attack sensed more wickets were possible and Sam Dickinson bowled with great pace and accuracy to pose the Hensall batsmen problems and he got his reward and finished his 3 over spell with 1 for 7. There was then a devastating spell from Jack Huddlestone (3 for 2) and Kayden Lane (2 for 6) who ripped through the Hensall middle order which included the key wicket of Cass (21) who had remained resolute against the Selby bowlers but with another great catch from Joe Bugg saw Hensall go from 39 for 3 to 42 for 8. There were still 5 overs to go but Harry Mcloughlin (1 for 3) finished off the innings bowling out the No 10 before Jack White with a brilliant direct hit to close the Hensall innings on 45 all out

The Selby batsman knew this would be anything but straightforward to knock off the runs and opening pair Jack Huddlestone (4) and Kayden Lane (6) started brightly and seemingly in control before a snick from Huddlestone saw an almighty collapse via some great bowling from the Hensall opening bowlers of Jacob Ellam (3 for 8 off 4 overs) and Charlie Haller (4 for 3 off 4 overs). This took Selby from 7 for no loss to 11 for 7 and in deep trouble, it was Joe Bugg and Jack White who had to withstand the wave of pressure from the Hensall attack and once the opening bowlers pair had completed their spell they started to build a partnership with a great level of maturity in playing the ball on its merits and looking for runs when they came along. Hensall threw everything they had at them but both the Selby batsman started to see the finishing line and with 2 boundaries from Bugg (15 no) and 1 for White (11 no) they secured at one point an unlikely win to send the Selby supporters home delighted despite missing a few fingernails. All credit to the Hensall side who showed great spirit in coming back into the game and they get to play against each other in the league on Sunday (20th)
