There was a trip to Goole for the unbeaten leaders on Sunday (27th) as they looked to maintain top spot and despite missing some of their regulars it was a comfortable victory as they bowled out Goole with over 8 overs remaining to win by 71 runs.

After losing the toss and put into bat it was the worse possible start for Selby as they lost opener Caspar Gray to LBW in the first ball of the game however Joe Bugg who opened with Gray was joined by Alfie Laverack and they were able to start building the innings without any further damage against some good bowling from the Goole bowlers. Runs were not easy to come by even though a couple of nice boundaries from Bugg had kept the run rate around 3 an over, just as it looked like the pair would continue the attack Laverack was caught close in at cover for 8. Jack White joined Bugg and by the half way point Selby had reached 33 for 1 and looked to accelerate with the aim to get close to the 100 mark but White (6) was sent back with a good delivery. This brought in Harry Huddlestone who was already averaging 170 for the u13s this season and he quickly got into his stride peppering the boundaries with some cracking shots. It wasn’t long before Huddlestone retired scoring 27 off just 16 balls. James Thackray joined Bugg who was playing a great role for the team and between them kept the scoring rate up before Thackray (5) was caught on the boundary looking for another boundary. Bugg reached his maiden retirement score (28 no) with the shot of the day as he drove it through the covers for his 4th boundary. Zac Kierans (5 no) and Jack Huddlestone (22 no) could see a good score was now on the cards and 3 more boundaries from Huddlestone and some quick running between the wickets saw them reach 119 for 4.

It was always going to be a tough ask for Goole to chase down the runs despite Selby missing a number of good bowlers but the strength in depth of the Selby attack quicky found success with opening bowler Rowan Weightman (1-9) bowling with great accuracy and picking up a wicket in his first over, at the other end Kayden Lane (1-1) bowled with good pace and after a maiden in his first over he got his reward in his 2nd taking the other Goole opener as they nicked it behind to wicketkeeper Harry Huddlestone. There was then a brilliant run out as Jack White had partially stopped a strong shot from the Goole batsman and as they looked for the 2nd run White was able to gather the ball and throw the ball to Huddlestone who was able to run out the batsman leaving Goole on 12 for 3. There was a mini revival as the Goole captain found some boundaries from the next bowling pair of Alfie Laverack and skipper Emma Brewer but it was Brewer who bowled a great line and length to spark a collapse in the middle order by removing 3 batsman for no runs including 2 catches from Jack Huddlestone and finished with 3 for 6. There was a another good little partnership of 20 from Goole before debutant Lewis Cox swooped in from square leg and with an accurate throw to the keeper saw another run out leaving Goole on 46 for 7. Cox (1-8) was then delighted to get his first wicket for Selby as he bowled the Goole batsman before at the other end Zac Kierans (2-1) finished off the innings with 2 more wickets as Goole finished on 48 all out.

Next up for Selby is a crucial game in the league campaign as they entertain Fishlake on Sunday (4th July) where the 2 unbeaten sides in the league will come head to head with the winner almost certain to be crowned champions with only 1 further game for each team to play
