Selby down Whitley at the battle of the bridge!
Percy Lane Cup
Thursday 3rd June 2021
Whitley Bridge v Selby CC u11
It was a beautiful summers evening, the two young sides arrived promptly for a 6pm start, even with the Chapel Haddlesey A19 Bridge still being out of commission – a short detour through Beale and Berkin didn’t cause too many problems for the visiting parents. (It’s always disheartening when pulling up at a ground which should be 5 minutes down road after a 25 min drive ?)

Whitley Bridge won the toss and elected to bat first against a strong Selby outfit, which included 3 newly selected Wakefield and District League U11 players pictured (Stan Bugg, Jack Hunter, Sam Rushby)

Selby were truly fantastic with the ball causing all sorts of problems to the young Whitley side, a stunning catch in the first over by debutant James Stead set the tone, followed by strong straight bowling performances by all the young players – no bowler went for more than 5 runs in their 2 overs with most contributing with Maidens and Wickets. Whitley Bridge managed to reach 33/5 after 16 overs.

It was Selby’s turn to bat and the boys were eyeing up some boundaries with the small field brought in even further for the u11 fixture.

The first pair of Sam Rushby and James Stead progressed the score nicely including a lovely 4 from Rushby, Stead on debut never looked flustered rotating the strike with ease. The second pair were the well-seasoned pair of George Wells and Stan Bugg, both of them powering 4’s with ease with loss of just one wicket. Then came Jack Hunter with Aaron Jones, Hunter was a man on a mission after an early loss of his wicket to a ball he crashed against his own pads. He really showed his District level ability with stunning 4’s to all parts of the ground – finishing with 5 -4’s in a total of 24. The final scoring pair of the evening was Seth Wratten and Riley Bugg! They were a little frustrated at times hitting fielders and with steady bowling only scoring 5 and 6 respectively to a loss of 1 wicket. Credit must be given to a young Whitley Bridge side who under the tutelage of Glynn showed great spirit and never gave up against an older and stronger Selby Side. Selby finished on 115/3.

Credit also to Kieran Bolger and Oli Kierans who were the 5th pair for Selby who came in and were unbeaten and rotated the strike throughout their 4 overs. (Both sides agreed to only count the 1st 4 pairs as Whitley only had 9 players on the evening.

Final Net scores Whitley Bridge 48 to Selby CC 140 – Selby won by 92 runs and move on to a top of the table clash with Hatfield Town at Sandhill Lane this Thursday 10th June 6pm start in the Wakefield and District League.
They are also looking forward to the next round of the Percy Lane Cup with a strong showing against Whitley Bridge – their next opponents will be quaking in their boots ?
