On a warm evening, it was perfect condition for both players and supporters alike, as a bumper crowd was down to watch this top of the table clash.
Hatfield started well; with ball in hand, and frustrated Selby’s opening pair to only 1 scoring shot; off the bat, in the first 4 overs. After seeing off both opening bowlers, the host settled with important knocks from Aaron Jellet 4 runs, Dylan Singh 6 runs, Evie Spence 6 runs & Jack Hunter 11 runs, resulting in a competitive score of 131 being set.
In reply, Hatfield once again started strong, scoring at regular intervals in the first 6 overs, with wicket keeper George Wells, who has really grown into the role, called into action on numerous occasions, but looking very assured.
Then the ball was thrown to Spencer Guy, who’s spell of 2 overs, 2 wickets for 6 runs, really set a platform to build from. Selby were still chasing the game, until an acrobatic run out from Alfie Harper, rejuvenated the fielding side once again.
This spurred on his teammates with contributions from Stan Bugg – 2 overs, 1 wicket for 2 runs, Dylan Davies – 2 overs, 1 wicket for 8 runs, Sam Rushby – 2 overs, 1 wicket for 8 runs and Jack Hunter – 3 overs, 1 wicket for 6 runs.
Hatfield more than played their part, with standout contributions from, Elliott Palmer 2 overs, 2 wickets for 7 runs, as well as 10 runs with the bat. Max Longstaff, 2 overs, 1 maiden, for 5 runs, and then 8 runs with the bat. Finlay Martin – 8 runs with the bat.
With 4 overs left to play, and 1 run in front, Hatfield were still very placed to win. However, Selby took 4 wickets and yielded only 2 runs. Captain Jack Hunter, finished with a final over wicket maiden, to complete an incredible victory, which saw Selby leapfrog over Hatfield, to claim top spot in the league.
Attention now turns to the league next game, which sees Selby CC, travel to Hensell CC, Thursday 17th June.
